It's a shame the light novels never got an English release. It being 18 volumes now doesn't help its chances though.

I'm kind of wondering how many manga adaptions are able to actually finish alongside the light novels...

Not many. If I were to give an off-hand estimate, I'd say likely fewer than 1 out of 10...

Never lose hope. The series has fervent supporters, and its thread on j-novel gets new posts every once in a while...

Because in the year it came out, battle harems were already being displaced by isekai. A year before, Konosuba had opened the floodgates.
I really hope the next fad comes soon.
