Lovely review, Caitlin! This was my second favorite show of 2021, only edged out by the stylish Sk8 the Infinity. Just like Haikyuu, it's virtually impossible to hate any of the characters in Backflip, even though some of them are walking tropes. Watari has my whole entire heart because my favorite character trope is apparently "kid who looks like a punk with a heart of gold who is a good senpai/older brother figure to his juniors." Either that, or because he looks like Kuramochi from Ace of Diamond ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
IMO, some of the best moments were when both teams were together bouncing off of each other, whether it be comparing their shared or differing interests, or competing over who could do the most backflips. The test of courage episode had me in stitches I was also impressed with the introspection into Onodera's character, a character who in any other sports show would be written off as the overconfident cocky teammate with very little character development. Here's hoping that the upcoming movie will eventually stream to Crunchyroll, I need to see how this story ends!

I might watch this later, as it does look good. Though the only reason I know about it is because a blogger I follow liked it a lot more than 2.43, the latter of which he thought was a terrible anime because of its really stupid writing, over reliance on melodrama, and piss-poor handling of serious issues.

Lol! Oh Skate Leading Stars, what an animation disaster you were.

Yep! Definitely twins separated at birth. Also, Misato seemed to have a rep as Backflip!!'s Sasuke, but to me he always struck me as AoD's Furuya. Sasuke's thing is being a self-centered grump, but Furuya and Misato are just earnest, talented kids with no social skills - but they're trying!

I really need to get around to watching this show, it's exactly my style but I ignored it while it was airing for some reason. Character designs by Robico is just the icing on the cake

It was a pleasant surprise of the season. I didn't expect anything coming to it, and was served with beatiful animation and lovely characters dynamic which reminds me a lot to the Haikyuu's boys. And agreed, it's the little things.
I wonder where those Free and Haikyuu fans are, cause I think this might relieve some of their thirst plus more.
Anyway, the horror episode was pretty scary and funny and was my highlight of the season.

Watching SK8, as far as I can see. That one pandered more. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I started watching this after dropping SK8 out of sheer cringe (either commit to being stupid fun, or tone it down and focus on the srs bzns, but the two don't go together; also Adam was just so bad from concept to final result, such a "how do you do, fellow kids" effort, I felt almost offended), but frankly I didn't see anything particularly unique or interesting about it. It's just another cute boys do sporty things, are shippy, kind of thing. These shows really live or die by the charm of their cast, and if someone is a jaded old thing like me and needs more than "soft boys with exaggerated personalities being moe" this cast is really not going to cut it. No judgement btw, nothing wrong with people liking soft boys with exaggerated personalities being moe, whatever makes one happy and feel squishy feelings inside. I personally just prefer a bit of edge, or extra silliness, or extra something. Something extra.
Also, I wasn't impressed by the sports scenes, and this is a general pet peeve of mine with these shows. I really don't like the approach re: using CGI. Not because I hate CGI, not at all, but when it comes to animating sports/activities with such physical exertion, I find that this kind of CGI usage completely removes the "physical exertion" part of it. Characters become weightless, there's no real dynamics and speed, no sign of effort, no show of strength, which then also takes away the gracefulness of it all.
Sports like this are amazing in real life because it's real human beings pushing physical boundaries, they make it look graceful despite it being so much effort. Animation already removes one part of this equasion, the "real human" part - so what is awesome IRL because it's a real human, is already not particularly awesome in animation which itself is a heightened depiction of reality. IMO in these shows the animation should pay attention to show the effort it takes for the characters to perform these feats, distort the body, exaggerate the movements, and so on and so forth, so that the viewers see a character actually exerting strength, instead of just bouncing around. /gets off soapbox
