ok i have no idea why 5 cm per second is getting an IMAX screening. i understand your name and weathering with you, those are the latest films and are actually part of the new 'makato shinkai-verse', so they should have picked The Garden of Words as that is also part of the movie universe.

Eh the Shinkai verse isn't really a thing, Yukino is supposed to be in Shikoku at the time she's in Your Name, and the ending of Your Name is sunny and unflooded. I think he said he just put the characters in as cameos rather than creating a cohesive universe.
As for why 5cm, I'd say it's probably his most iconic work aside from Your Name. Though Garden of Words in IMAX would be insane with the rain sounds
