You and I Are Polar Opposites (TV) Source: Manga (completed @ 8 volumes by Kōcha Agasawa) Demographic: Shounen Animation Studio: Lapin Track Genres: comedy, drama, romance, slice of life Themes: coming-of-age, misunderstandings, school, social anxiety Plot Summary: Next to Miyu Suzuki, a trendy and bubbly high school girl, sits Yuusuke Tani, a quiet and frank boy. Their interactions are brief, limited to Suzuki's unprompted random questions and Tani's succinct answers. Yet, beneath these simple exchanges, feelings of love are quietly blossoming. Suzuki sees Tani for who he is: a straightforward boy who respects everyone equally, completely unconcerned about fitting in. Unlike Tani, she is too hung up on what everyone else thinks, desperate to keep her crush a secret. However, a slight misunderstanding leads to Suzuki confessing her feelings—and to her delight, Tani feels the same. Jittery with excitement, the young couple starts dating, embarking on a wonderful journey of friendship and love. [-MAL] Air Date & Platform: January 11, 2026 (Sunday) Available on: Crunchyroll Episode Count / Runtime: Pending [EDIT: Fancy opener stuff edited. -TK] |

I really dug this one. In fact, of all the new shows I've seen, I'd say that this one, Journal of Witch, and Playing Death Games to Put Food on the Table stood out as distinct and high quality, and I say that knowing that some people don't go for slice of life drama like Journal or will consider Death Games torture porn.
I liked that the friends were really friends. I liked that the teasing girl anime was shown from the perspective of the teasing girl. I liked that the whole anime isn't going to be about will they/won't they but how will they? I liked the two leads. And I liked that the show had it's own distinct vibe and energy. |

Agreed, that was a great first episode. There is a whole lot of personality to be found in the premiere. That goes for the characters who are all likeable and for the playful animation. I particularly like that Tani is a bit different from the standard silent male trope, he may not speak much but he has proper social skills and he can be pretty smooth. Romance wise I like that we are not having an endless will they or won't they.

A nice cute show. I like the whole twist the first episode ends with what a series like this normally ends on. So interesting to see where they go from here.
And of all the characters I can compare the main character to, the one she reminds me most of is Helga Pataki. The way she puts the guy on such a high bar, how self contiguous of letting others know she feels, she does have that Helga vibe. I don't know why I compare her to that, because she doesn't bully the guy, though if they were Elementary school maybe she would, maybe she would. And the voice cast in both the Japanese and English is excellent. This could be my favorite anime of the season. |

Nice that they move beyond the tedious parts of rom-com right off the bat. I also appreciate the art style, and the Takahashi-style eyes drawn on characters in some of the scenes.

Episode 1
I'm pretty tough on school rom-coms these days but I enjoyed this. I love all of Tani's many expressions, as well as her adorable, yet totally inexplicable, tiny vampire fangs. I like this couple and want to see them together which I can't always say in these kinds of shows. I like that the characters are naturalistic as opposed to, oh, you're the Energetic One, you're the Quiet One, you're the Tsundere, etc. Some nice humour with secondary characters. |

I liked the manga a lot so I was sure I'd like this, but here we also seem to be getting a really well made adaptation. Should be one of the best anime of the season.

Episode 2
That was TOO cute. What a fun date. Loved how Tani was so embarrassed when Suzuki could read the search history on his phone - that's a very human thing. But she managed to ease his mind and BOMB he switches to hottie boyfriend mode in an instant! Funny that he has that side to him too. Also loved the hamburger bit. I was already thinking - but how are you gonna eat that mountain of food without looking like a fool with sauce everywhere and 2 seconds later she realized And how he chuckled when she 100% went for that burger with that face and huge mouth. Cute and funny at the same time. Ah, there should be more romcom anime like this. |

@A Mystery - The thing I liked about him getting embarrassed is that she says he doesn't care about what anyone thinks, but he's obviously outside his comfort zone just like she is.
I like the way they vary the pace with gag-manga like scenes where the supporting cast plays a role interspersed with weird fantasy art sequences with fairly straightforward interactions between the leads. It's been a minute since I've had this much fun with a rom-com. |

It is such a joy when a show is all about having fun. The gag moments, the romance and even the awkward bits: it is all very entertaining and playful. The latter is an accomplishment since I often dislike when it gets awkward. Some real solid character growth in just two episodes btw.

You know a show is doing something right when even a School Rom-Com Grumpy Pants like me is having a good time. As always, the Many Expressions of Suzuki kept me entertained. I do have one minor, minor quibble: I feel like both Suzuki and Tani have told the other they love them way too early. I feel like a sentiment like that has to be properly earned.

@Blood you would rather have three seasons before they get there with hand holding being the end of the first one, saying their first names at the end of the second one and there being four interrupted confessions? One of those due to loud fireworks naturally.

Well i i want to see this fake movie, it looked like my cup of tea.
Yup the show continues to rock, I love these two characters and their relationship, a breath of fresh air. Though judging by the OP and ED, the focus is going to spread out to their classmates and their little stories. I wonder if I will love this series when the focus shifts to other characters. |

Whoa, whoa, whoa... back up there, Mr. Put Words in My Mouth. I am very happy with the pace their relationship is developing at. There's no way I'm advocating for the usual Glacial Movement of the average school rom-com. But saying "I love you" too soon cheapens the feeling. It has no more weight than saying, "Good morning." See, the problem smurky is that you are obviously a huge man-whore who drops the "I love you" bomb 15 minutes after meeting a woman. Shame on you! |

I get where you are coming from Blood but compared to the eternal limbo that many romcom characters place themselves in with their inactions it seems like a better alternative even with a possible premature ''I love you''. Maybe it is due to my frustrations with romance anime speaking but I am very much over dragging things out.
Btw Blood, you are kind of putting an age on yourself with that comment, we of the younger generations no longer meet in real life nor speak to people of the opposite gender face to face (sadly, less of a joke than it may sound). |
