I’m not a huge Suicide Squad Isekai fan, so I’m not defending it, but why exactly do so many anime/manga fans seem to hate comics, specifically superhero ones? I used to think it was a stereotype, but recently in Twitter and here, I see more and more fans just bashing superhero stuff. Is there any particular reason?

Dahlia's yet another case of some fantastic novels being adapted so poorly no one watching could possibly believe this material worked on the page. There's no shortage of failed light novel adaptions, but this may well have been the worst yet.

I imagine it's simply a case of the sheer overexposure of superhero stories in movies & TV coming from the major American studios for the past... uhhh... 15+ years. Marvel's obviously the big one in that regard, but DC definitely hasn't been any less pervasive either, especially since while Marvel at least tends to have a long-term plan behind its productions DC has mostly throwing stuff at the wall & seeing what sticks. The MCU, at this point, has become so overwhelmingly large, while DC's efforts just feel random at this point, more often than not.

Suicide Squad Isekai (from a conceptual perspective, at least) was a good example of that, i.e. "OK, that second movie we released did well & was actually liked, so let's go with more of that kind of story! Also, anime's really popular, as is this whole 'isekai' thing, so let's work with a Japanese studio to squish the two together!!"; to be fair, though, I did watch the first two episodes of SSI & found them enjoyable. It's admittedly hard to look at shows like these, though, & not look at it as just another cog in the giant machine of superhero stories that have long become a bit stale.

Dahlia in Bloom was disappointing for me too, though I don’t think it was terrible. There were some really good parts, but there were also setups that didn’t seem to go anywhere. I did like the characters though, and the last episode was a nice, heartfelt finale.

Agree on putting Roshidere at the bottom.

For those who didn't watch out Dahlia, Nick's screen shot choice is an inspired one, but one that requires some explanation. Over the series' last third, shots of a window sill where fallen leaves and twigs were collecting are such a frequent transition shot that it became a much-commented-on running joke among those watching the series, as well as a symbol for how unexciting the show was through those episodes. While I still somewhat liked the series, I can certainly understand why two staff chose it and can't dispute their complaints.

My vote instead goes to Failure Frame. While I do think it got slightly better towards the end of the season (I like the leopard woman character), I still mostly agree with Christopher's criticisms of it and always considered it my trash view for the season.

I also have to agree with James that Quality Assurance has flagged since its very promising start. Hardly an awful series, and I still like its characters and some of its ideas, but it seems a bit aimless.

From the fact that Tasuketsu isn't mentioned, I assume that none of the staff watched it out? It's by far the lowest-rated series of the season on MAL, and the two episodes of it I watched certainly seemed to be trending in a bad direction.

My Deer Friend Nokotan is a reminder that 4-koma manga are, in fact, tricky to adapt into anime.

My Deer Friend Nokotan is not a 4-koma manga, so its anime adaptation is not a reminder of this.

Probably doesn't deserve 'worst', but I am mostly disappointed with Spice and Wolf. I was not a fan of the original and was hoping to change my mind with this reboot. My interest in it stems from its highly touted reputation of "making economics fun", but outside of its creative use of shorting and maybe derivatives in its narrative, everything else is just... okay?

I am also constantly distracted by the dynamic between the main characters, and the contrasts in Holo's character feels like a deliberate attempt at creating an ultimate 'moe' weapon - which isn't bad per se but is pretty jarring when you're not the target market. I don't know if the novels will spend more time fleshing her out, but at this point in the anime, her quirkiness doesn't 'blend in' with the setting, which is too bad because I really wanted to love this world, but only if Holo is not in it.

The problem with Narenare is twofold: 1) it never decided on what it wanted to be so tried to do everything and 2) whatever it did, it had to fit in twelve episodes. Hence storylines were rushed, certain plots points were dropped halfway through or only popped up at the very last minute and it all was overstuffed and chaotic.

This should have been two cours with the cast it had and these developments could've had a chance to breathe.

Nokotan was such a disappointment. Not as funny as the memes and marketing

I think this is a good take. Personally, having anime Peacemaker look like John Cena is the kind of thing that sticks out in a way that makes me question the motivation. Sure, anime is generally meant to market something, but in this situation it comes off as "we have this other stuff on Max, and this whole thing with James Gunn, that we want you to watch."

My worst picks (of things I actually finished):

Reincarnated as a Slime 3rd season. Endless parade of board meetings and conflicts with no actual stakes. I think I'd like this one more if I believed it would ever let the main character fail in any way, or if I hadn't long since lost track of all the different characters and conspiracys going on. The second season was at least entertaining, even if it featured Rimaru crossing a major line but this one was just boring.

My Deer Friend. Also very boring. Occasionally funny (the finale fake out really got me) but never lived up to it's full potential. Watch Nichijou or Pop Team Epic instead.

Code Geass: Roze of the Recapture. Started off by copying wayyy too much of the original series (A dark haired member of the britannia royal family holds a grudge against britannia and gains mind control powers? Daring today aren't we). Despite that I think this would have worked if they'd done the same story in much more episodes (because it feels hypocritical to complain about a code geass story having inconsistent characterization or bad plot twists lol) and I was genuinly invested in Sakuya and Ash, so I don't regret the watch.

The Magical Girl and the Evil Lieutenant Used to Be Archenemies. NGL I'm a bit baffled by how much other people seemed to have liked this one. I hate how Byakuya is basically just treated like a damsel in distress, it's frequently quite gross (tf is the show doing with the mascot), it could use more action, and overall just felt like an extremely inferior version of Love After World Domination. Sad because it looks gorgeous and it was one of the shows I was most interested in at the start but it never lived up to what I wanted from it.

Other iffy shows that were better than the above four: Roshidere (mostly liked Yuki and Kuze but the shows refusal to let Alya succeed at anything without his help baffled me), Isekai Suicide Squad (A middling show, but I had fun with it. Clayface was the standout). This season of Shy also felt weaker than the first, but I did feel that it ended up better than I was worrying about at points. I also liked Shoushimin more than other people did, though it definitely felt like it dragged at times.

EDIT: Also I never watched ToG S2. Moderately enjoyed the first season in part due to how fantastic it looked, and was disinterested in S2 in large part due to the aesthetic downgrade. Seems like that was a good decision.

I understand the criticisms but seeing SHOSHIMIN being labeled as Worst TWICE hurts to see. Its no HYOUKA (unfortunately) but I still enjoyed it by the end & am definitely going to see more via S2. Hopefully, the introduction of some new faces will add some much needed spice the show sorely needs.

I didn't checked a lot of shows out this season so I suppose TOG S2 wins the Worst title by default. Its a real shame as I thought S1 was pretty interesting in its presentation. S2 really dropped the ball here trying to shove a whole new cast that had less than half the excitement & energy the S1 cast offered. Hey but atleast the OP & even the ED are pretty good so theres that I guess.
