3D, why??? Did AnimEigo missed the announcement that 3D TVs has been dead since 2017, and no 4K UHD/HDTV makers are no longer making 3D TVs anymore. Even 3D blu-rays aren't even getting made except for some certain market. So it doesn't make why would you have episodes in 3D if 3D TVs are not being made or content wise, not being made today? 
I would like an explanation for that one since 3DTVs aren't being made anymore. EDIT Disclosure: I used to had a 3D HDTV I bought back in 2012, and it died on early 2023, and I now have a 4K UHDTV since that same time period. There are no 3DTV being made as of this post. As a matter of fact, I don't see any 3D UHDTV being made or produced at all as far as I know.
That make sense, it was never broadcasted on US TV or any English-speaking countries, hence no English dub. But the inclusion of the French dub will kind of make the anime more immersive for some of our anime fans here. I welcome this inclusion. It has nothing to do with 3D TVs, it's that the anime itself was made in 3D using a special system that's different from other 3D stuff we're used to. They already mentioned it in their initial announcement and in their February livestream. |

The show was made in the late 70s, so it obviously wasn't made with modern 3D TVs in mind. The article should have clarified, as it's been explained before by AnimEigo, but Remi was actually produced with the ability for viewers to use 3D glasses (which will be included in AnimEigo's release) to watch it via the Pulfrich effect. It takes advantage of darkening one of the lenses so as to produce a three-dimensional depth perception trick via lateral movement (i.e. left & right only). It doesn't require anything more than the glasses, and watching the show without the glasses will look perfectly normal as a 2D experience. |

You are REALLY overthinking the 3D thing. It's like the old red and blue 3D glasses. The show (for whatever reason) was made in such a way that it can use the Pulfrich effect to give the illusion of 3D. The material exists already and was provided, so they're just sharing the fun novelty with us as a historical curiosity. It's just an alternate way to watch.
Anyway. I'm super excited for this release! Remi is honestly one of my favorite anime, and I'm ecstatic to finally be able to own a copy of my very own. I've been looking forward to it ever since it was announced.

Me too! I first watched Remi back in 2010 when ANN was streaming five episodes of it every week. Now I have a reason to go back to it, and I get paid this Friday, so I'll definitely be dropping money on that set, especially since apparently copies are going to ship out early! |

Awesome! Yeah, I know my Bubblegum Crisis preorder shipped ahead of time and I saw people posting about AnimEigo's Bubblegum Crash and Nasu discs arriving a bit early too, so I think it's a very good chance we'll get Remi early too. My birthday is late April, so it's almost like AnimEigo got me the perfect present. I hope your set arrives safely! |

I get that the 3D thing is mostly just a silly bonus, but I do have to ask:
Does it negatively impact the video bitrate? |

Ohh, I watched it in a holidays in Mexico, decades ago; apparently it was a huge success there, including the Opening and Ending songs.
Strange thing was that it didn't reach Spain until much later. In fact, I am quite sure the remake, with a girl instead of a boy, was released on TVs before the original series. In any case, prepare tissues a la Dog of Flanders. |

Given that it would be literally impossible for this method of 3D to impact the bitrate, I would say it’s a no. As mentioned in previous comments, the article is slightly misleading? This isn’t another setting or anything like that, it’s a byproduct of the way it was animated. The “3D version” and the normal version are the exact same version, but if you wear certain glasses, you get a 3D effect because the anime uses so much parallax scrolling. The type of 3D glasses can be sort of replicated by holding sunglasses so they only cover one eye, it’s that low impact. I’m actually curious to know if the 3D thing was actually deliberate or not. Osamu Dezaki used parallax scrolling a lot in general, but Remi has it going on almost all of the time. AnimEigo is the only place I’ve seen talking about it and looking it up doesn’t bring up anything. |

So I got chance to read some of your reply/feedback to my OP, and I want to address this.
Yeah, I came to realize this when I went around the web and found out this anime was the first 3D anime. When I first read the ANN headline, I thought this was a 2D to 3D conversion done by AnimEigo (or the Japanese producer did the post-conversion 3D given the way how James Cameron gave Titanic that treatment, I just assume this was the same thing). So I was a bit baffled why release the anime in 3D when 3DTVs was dead since 2017, after doing some research, that make sense now. Although to be honest, if 3D TV was still alive and not dead in 2017, I'm now curious and wondering how 3D TV's technology would've worked for this anime.
Yeah I came to realize that when I looked at the web and found more information about that, and found about Remi being the first 3D TV. Again, I'll apologize for my ignorance. Also, I never watched the February livestream (I don't watch any livestream stuff relating to anime), so that's why I missed that information. Hell I didn't know about Remi being the first 3D anime until some of you left comment on this thread.
Well, 3D film technology does exist back in 1890's, and 3D technology did exist even before the invention of film. That's why you can have WWII in 3D (yes, that is real). As a matter of fact, the first 3D film came out in 1922. I would like to see how the the Pulfrich effect would work on current HDTV. At the same time, it's very sad that 3DTV died in 2017, if 3DTV are continuing to be made to this day, I would've like to see how 3DTV's technology would've been used for Remi, Nobody's Boy. |

The Pulfrich effect works exactly the same regardless of screen type. 3D tvs would have no real impact. And I know 3D is old, my question was if Osamu Dezaki specifically was like "let's make this in 3D using the Pulfrich Effect" or if he accidentally stumbled on it by ramping his general love of parallax scrolling to the crazy level in Remi. |
