I simultaneously want to see this but I feel like it's gonna make the wait for actual new episodes feel even longer so I might skip it, I'm honestly torn...

Just got in from seeing it myself. Lot of fun but definitely don't go into it expecting a complete story or anything, it is very obvious in just being the first three episodes and doesn't really stand alone at all.

Weirdly unless it was at the start before the introduction (was a few minutes late, got in right before the recap started) they didn't play the OP? I dunno, if it was there that'd be a weird place for it, would think it'd be after the recap.

No, there was just a really weird segue from recap to the start of the film. At on point I thought they were still doing the recap and didn't know the film began.

As someone who didn't really watch all the episodes of the first season (my partner was more into it), I didn't know what to expect. I think it worked just fine as a film, despite me knowing that it was just a mashing of eps together (which was evident by some cuts and fades either way). It ended on a decent enough cliffhanger to look forward to the show in a few weeks.

No OP was a huge let down. Getting to see Otonoke on the big screen was such an amazing experience.

Otherwise I'm very happy with how they portrayed this arc so far, and ending where it did was certainly a great cliffhanger. A MUCH better place to end than where S1 left off.

For anyone on the fence, I certainly won't mind rewatching these episodes when the show premiers proper.

This can still feel shocking in animated entertainment that, outside of all-girl squad action series, usually segregates its female characters as trapped somehow while we wait for the male characters to rescue her.

It hasn't been like this, whether in animated or live action entertainment in the west or Japan, for 20 years. In real life, Naruto had Sakura fighting with Team 7 from their first mission in 2002, One Piece had Nami as Luffy's first crew member in 1999 and while 2004's Bleach did make Rukia a damsel in distress for the first arc A. it was a device to kick off the plot and B. Bleach had a cast full of female fighters like Yoruichi who rescued Ichigo and the other guys plenty of times. Even a show infamous and heavily criticized for the male gaze like Fairy Tail (2009) had Lucy and Natsu fighting together from the first episode. Go back a little further to the Toonami shows, Cowboy Bebop had Faye Valentine - who never needed to be rescued any more times than Spike or Jet did and did plenty of rescuing of the guys herself - and Outlaw Star had THREE females who could fight (Melfina, Aisha, Twilight) and only one guy, Gene, who could. Even Inuyasha had Kagome go from a sailor uniform-wearing girly girl to every bit the fighter that Sango was from the beginning, and Kagome and Sango had to rescue Miroku all the time plus even had to rescue Inuyasha at times. Go back a bit further and while it was true of early cyberpunk like Akira and Megazone 23 - plus Dirty Pair and Bubblegum Crisis fit the "all girl squad" thing - that was basically dead by the late 80s with Appleseed, Ghost in the Shell and Battle Angel Alita.

No, it is no longer 1986 with Bulma locked up in Emperor Pilaf's palace. (Instead that same franchise, the most old fashioned big shonen one, added a ton of female fighters in Dragon Ball Super 10 years ago.) The only thing that is shocking is people who insist on still fighting the last battle.

I went to see it and despite not watching the first season I enjoyed it. The cliffhanger sucked but I’m invested enough in the arc’s story to at least see how it ends when those episodes finally come out.
