October 2024.

Or, eight months.

EIGHT. MONTHS. It took them to do something about this.

Garbage service continues to be garbage. News at 11.

Those seem fairly restrictive of creative freedom to me. I feel like this is a reason why despite Webtoon being so popular I don't think it'll have the same cultural or lasting impact manga does with strict guidelines like those. Imagine having to pull something like One Piece because groups often accuse it of misogyny. To their credit they seem to do the same when people accuse stuff of misandry or possessing extreme feminist content as well so they're equal opportunity in their restrictions.

I'm pretty sure there are dozens of mangas where the wife is depicted as a gold digger.
Why is this one so special?
Or is it actually spot on the mark and people dont like the truth?

I am curious too since from what was said in this article it doesn't seem like a big deal. Will probably look into it later to see if it's a translation thing that doesn't mean as much in English.

Ok, is that industry that wants to "surpass" the manga and anime industry with all the investment in South Korea? I think Japan is in a safer zone Smile

The thin line between telling a controversial story and creative freedom
Sure is tough and another sign of our times:
Do Nazi's get an opinion?
Does a comedy comic get to tell jokes about women?
Where's the "limit"?

So did they get upset over a 'promiscuous woman settles down with a guy and becomes a proper lady" type story? Or was it specifically the slang word they used in the title. Both There's a lot of manga with the word 'bitch' in the title which is the slang term for "slut' and similar stories and archetypes in manga. I guess they wouldn't like those either.

What I hear about Korea seems to flip-flip between anti-feminists run everything and can get game devs removed for being extreme feminists or making hate symbol hand gestures and feminists control everything and the 4B movement controlling things. I don't know which one is true anymore.

Feminists have never controlled any society ever. That's why it exists, because women are opressed. Korea has misogyny problems like any society, there's been a rise in feminism and a backlash to that as tends to happen whenever an attempt to improve society somewhat is made

I don't see how censoring and banning media is improving society at all. I admit I'm not too familiar with Korea's laws and values so they might not have the same kind of values Japan has when it comes to the topic of creative freedom but usually when feminists go after manga for sexism in Japan it makes the work more popular and people rally behind it in defense such as Getsuyoubi no Tawawa

I mean In Tawawa's case it's just people disliking something, not trying to get it banned (and if some did then that was an insignificantly small group)
It seems like the situation in Korea is similar to the incel situation in the US, in that people have been murdered, so imagine if someone in the US made a comic about an incel forcing a woman to be his gf or something. It would make sense to remove that. It's not censorship. Webtoon can remove whatever they want for whatever reason because they are a company.

I wonder if this will affect Solo Leveling in the future. If this was just the English branch being too sensitive I'd write it off as just western sensitivity like the Get Schooled situation but the fact it's the Korean side seems like it'll set a really bad precedent to me. You know complainers aren't going to stop here and will make more demands in the future.
