"While this film's take on character of Keiji is a fun subversion of his image both on page and on screen, the character gets put into a position which ultimately becomes a hijacking of Rita's arc at the last possible moment" - guess that's kind of to be expected when you're talking about the actual protagonist of the original.

I recently read the original novel. Reading this review, it sounds like the producers of this anime just felt like doing their own thing.

That's been most of the adaptations, admittedly. Edge of Tomorrow just got away with it because Tom Cruise had several metric tons of charisma.

Also: It was really, really good.

Now that this film is having special showings in the theater, I hope it’s okay to revive this thread.
I think the review is fair to the film, thouogh my assessment of the film is a bit higher than the reviewer — I guess the predictability the reviewer complains about just seemed natural to me, since I read the novel years ago.
Early in the film there are some weird scenes where RIta’s progress on the battlefield seems to be being observed through some sort of video device. These scenes are explained later, but I thought they were a nice touch.
Keiji has his own story, and while it’s true Rita’s choice was taken from her, Keiji’s choice was pretty much a natural progression of his story, so I’m not as aggravated at it as was the reviewer/
I think it’s worth seeing in the theater if you get a chance.
