This was not on my radar at all, and I had written it off by the title as some CGDCK thing. Then I finally read a description and checked it out.
I loved it! At first blush the art style was kind of off-putting, but that lasted about a minute before I just glommed onto it. Kyouji is a wonder - wryly sardonic and awkward and deadpan cool all at once somehow. So many facets shown in just one episode and he's still believable. Likewise, Satomi's reactions to the bizarre situation he finds himself abducted into range from disbelief and wtf to horror and screw this, I'm ordering food now. Plus being on the cusp of puberty is also crashing down on him. He's the perfect foil for Kyouji and is holding his own on the stage character-wise. I was just riveted through the whole episode. Can't wait for more. I wonder why the late debut? |

There's only one volume of manga, and the anime is slated to be 5 episodes. Looking at Doga Kobo's production slate on Wikipedia, they only have Shiunji Family Children (12 episodes), Captivated by You (5 episodes), and this show scheduled for 2025. They're probably taking it easy and doing animation assistance for other studios, while saving their budget and energy for Oshi no Ko S3 and Alya Hides Feelings in Russian S2, next year. EDIT: Spelling. Last edited by Tony K. on Fri Jul 25, 2025 11:41 am; edited 1 time in total |

I happened to watch the film when on a plane last year.
The story is a lament about the dying out of Yakuza culture which offered strong camaraderie and city gentrification eroding characterful neighbourhoods framed though the lens of a coming of age story. The ending also doesn't play out the way you would expect. Also the twist about the nature of the tattoo and real reason why the gang members try so hard not to get it cracked me up. Edit: Watched the first episode now, its moving at a much faster pace than the film did! A couple of things like his voice beginning to break and the Hello Kitty design of the tattoo being the scary thing rather than it was the threat of pain caused by the amateur tattooist applying it had the threads started early but were mid film revelations. I think they had also introduced by this point the reason he had sought out the kid for lessons (the worst singer in the gang that kept receiving the tattoos he found out was paying for professional signing lessons so he wouldn't receive it next time). They also changed it so that there were multiple penalty tattoos applied each year whereas in the film while they regularly did karaoke it was only on the bosses birthday they did the formal competition. |

Satomi's face game in this is a marvel. His reactions to everything are just great and his nightmares are hilarious. The crying Mona Lisa portrait for lost youth was priceless. Loved Kyouji's explanation for the finger in the glove box. I also liked Satomi's mom's take on her son "becoming a delinquent," since he smelled of smoke after skipping out on the field trip. She seemed to kind of like the idea.
It's a shame this is only 5 episodes. I could watch these characters all season. |

Second episode slowed down to a crawl, they had obviously moved some of the interesting stuff to the first episode to grab viewers.

Well, for some reason it looks like we'll have to wait until the end of Sept for the last episode. I get that it's sharing a time slot with Captivated, by You, but why not start that after this is finished? smh
CbY seems interesting, but not nearly as much fun as Karaoke was. Ema looks like he'll grow up to be Kyouji. I also see a lot of different characters for him to bounce off of, but I'm having trouble telling some of them apart. Also wondering where the girl fits into the boys' school. Since there's no thread for CbY, I'll just add comments here if I have any more, since they're sharing the time slot, staff and mangaka, not to mention the same ANN articles. Might as well share the same thread. |

IMO, the second episode of Captivated, By You was a big step up from the first. It contained two excellent little love stories - the first one in particular was one of my favorite love stories I've seen in anime. I have to admit I didn't really get CBY when I read the manga - it's much more appealing to me (so far) in animated form.

Episode 5 (Finale)
I think 5 episodes was the perfect length for this. I enjoyed it with only the occasion BL squick factor lightly dusted in (squick due to how young Satomi is at the beginning). Fortunately, the show mostly glossed over this element. I wouldn't mind more 5 to 6 episode series assuming that half a cours is enough to tell the story. |

I still don't see the point of swerving into the other series and leaving this last ep for after that was done. I think I would've enjoyed this finale more if I hadn't had to spend so much time readjusting to it and figuring out whether this was a flashback to before he met Satomi or a time skip or what. Kyouji just looked so different to me (and I guess 3 years in the slammer would do that) that it was hard to tell for too long.
It also didn't help that all the main characters in both series all look the same to me, with slight variations. But of the two, I would've just preferred more of Karaoke instead of any of Captured, which I never really warmed up to all that much. |

Agreed. I see no value in holding back the finale of LGK! I never even bothered sampling Captivated by You. Would love to know the rationale behind the decision to delay.
