I don't think anybody thought Zenno was the protagonist; they thought he would be a better choice for protagonist.

In the comments in Manga Plus, many people said on how Zenno made a better protagonist than "mouth always open" Gakuro. |

Gakuro is one of those protags who grows on you more the longer he's around, he's more like Deku than anything else.
In terms of the art, there was always a quality to it that set it apart from it's peers that I couldn't quite parse, it was only recently when someone mentioned it that I realized it's the large amount of panels this series has, it makes the pages look very busy. |

I hadn't thought about it that way, but you're right. It's not about people mistaking him for the protagonist, but rather them seeing the potential for a more compelling story with him at the center.
