I can only speculate about just how atrocious the original script for a movie based on an almost half-century old arcade game with no story beyond "shoot the endless waves of alien spaceships until you lose all your lives and run out of quarters or until the machine breaks" might have been to necessitate a total rewrite.

We pretty much already got a horrible unnecessary adaptation of Space Invaders. It was called Pixels.
I also can't think of a movie of this without thinking of the deep cut Spaced Invaders 80s flick.

Why bother when we all know that the best adaptation of Space Invaders is Fry's segment from Futurama's Anthology of Interest II?
Now, seriously, I know that video game adaptations have become more popular among Hollywood studios due to the successes of the Super Mario Bros. Movie, Minecraft, Sonic and even Uncharted, but how do you adapt Space Invaders? While both Mario and Minecraft don't have the deepest stories in their games of origins, they at least have some foundations in other games and aditional media, Space Invaders is basically an alien invasion story, like War of the Worlds (which I think Taito's designers cited it as an influence to the original arcade game) or Independence Day.

Can we just... Can we just stop the vapid adaptations? Seriously, it's not even a video game with a rich plotline. It's Space Invaders. Seriously, if I were head of this project, I would just write the grittiest story about a mutually genocidal war between Humanity and aliens, all just to piss off whoever forced me into getting involved in such a thing in the first place.

Honestly, I think they'll just adopt a similar approach to what was done for the Battleship film. Most of the story will be unrelated human drama added in to pad the run time, and the whole tie-in to the game will mainly be the final third act battle segment where the main characters start blasting the alien invaders out of the sky with laser cannons.

Hey the Super Mario Movie did good despite how notoriously shallow (& redundant) the plot and characters are.

If they didn’t stop with this in the 90’s and didn’t stop with in it the 00’s we are they going to do it now?

Blackballing yourself from the industry out of misplaced spite is a hell of a career move.

Wasn't there already a gritty Gamecube adaptation of Space Invaders in 2002 called Space Raiders that added a story?
And didn't it flop hard?
I'm sure all this movie needed was a new scriptwriter, though. Clearly a 1978 arcade game with no story or characters to speak of is adaptation gold just waiting to happen.

At least when they made Tetris into a movie, they managed to mine the events surrounding its licensing to make a good film, rather than try to adapt the falling blocks into a narrative.
I am looking forward to the next season of The Studio, having Seth Rogen's character being forced to adapt Centipede into a movie, because it feels like the same type of non-plot being given one.

Flopped so hard everyone forgot about it.

Difference is Tetris is far more popular and iconic than Space Invaders is. Though having said that a biographical movie based on Tetris wasn’t exactly a necessity either. As most people familiar with Tetris more or less no the background of how the game got made.

I needed this reminder that they're even making a Space Invaders film.

They could adapt Space Invaders Part 4's plot &
| Space Invaders wiki wrote: | | Years after the Invaders unsuccessful invasion of Earth, the Invaders have invaded Neptune and Neptune's planetary shape has turned itself into a Black Hole. The whole Invader fleet have begun their invasion into the Solar System until they reached Earth using Saucers that came from Neptune and spread across the Galaxy, creating huge bases for their Invasion Force. A list of Images of the UFO sightings was located in Earth and the common UFO, a Walker UFO and finally a Ball UFO were shown, Earth's forces hasten and developed a Laser Cannon that can transform as a Tank and a Space Fighter, they called it CG30, a prototype laser cannon that can kill the Invaders in ground, sky or space combat. They called this Operation as MJ-12. the fate of Earth and the Solar System depends on the CG30. |
