The way the news filtering system on the ANN front page works has been bothering me for quite some time. The way it works right now is not inherently bad, but it only covers half of what a filtering system should actually cover, at least in my opinion.
It is currently possible to filter by category as well as by topic. However, the fancy news filter at the top of the page is in no way exhaustive. That means, as long as it's not set to "all," it's impossible to hide specific topics without having to worry about missing something. Personally, I don't care about live action or Korean stuff. But just selecting everything besides those two doesn't guarantee I'm not missing something with an entirely different topic. The same is also true for categories. There are more than four types of news items, especially the "streaming now" section, which will always disappear if I try to hide reviews or whatever. The whole thing is just missing a negative filter for news items. By the way, this also extends to the whole regional news thing. I don't live in the US, UK, France, or India. I don't care about any of those news items. But right now there is no way to just hide them. It's cool that users are able to look at only news items that are tagged as local. But at the same time, I should be able to hide them from my view. Just let me hide everything that's regional. There is even already a topic for local news, so that should easily work with a negative filter for topics. I hope my explanation isn't too convoluted. In short, I just want to be able to hide news items I don't care about without losing any of those I do care about. If that could somehow be incorporated into the news filtering system, that would be very much appreciated. |
