Still no confirmation on what company makes the subtitles

Whew, good thing they didn't drop Aegisub as a subtitling tool like so many feared. The many timing errors (lines disappearing sooner than they should or overlapping with the next one) actually bothered me more than the lack of typesetting in some of the season premieres I checked out last week.

Not going to lie, but I don't really care what subtitle program CR is using, as long as they fix their subtitles.

The Dark History of the Reincarnated Villainess has a lot of untranslated onscreen text so I wouldn’t say the issue’s been resolved

I don't know, it's kind of hard to believe without any details and that it happened specifically around new shows for the season. Ongoing shows are more likely to be using whatever system they were using before instead of changing it midway, so it still sounds like they switched to something else and it broke.
I guess I'll believe that last part when I see it. I was watching some stuff from last year recently, and episodes still had things like hard subtitles on dubbed episodes or signs etc. being completely mistimed. |

Corporate translation: “It was definitely due to a change in how we create subtitles, use of new vendors or AI.”

Some users? Some titles? Man, they surely have some balls to say that, but what surprises me is that Crunchyroll actually has a PR department, I thought they didn't had one after 10 days of total silence from them.

This is blatantly lying. It was ALL users, on ALL new content. And it was proven to be OOONA. I honestly can't believe they're trying to gaslight like this. edit: and it's still happening. Only a few episodes have even been fixed |

Most ongoing series & sequels were not affected. Also users on the Prime Video & Youtube channels did not experience changes, as they had the sub-par standard due to platform restrictions since those were created.
Whilest it was proven that CCC (Closed Captions Converter) was involved, as stated in the subtitle files, I've not yet seen a prove for OOONA. |

In relation to this statement, I would just like to remind everyone of the 2017 reduced video quality case, where they also claimed that "These encodes were affected by a mistake in our encoding settings discovered after the catalog had been encoded", which as it turns out, was a total lie - the then-head of video at Crunchyroll was caught on video talking about how the quality reduction was a completely deliberate attempt to cut costs, and they were just hoping that the customers wouldn't notice. I will have more to say on this matter soon, but in general if any service is claiming a widespread reduction in quality to be solely the result of some vaguely-described "mistake", you should pretty much always take it with a massive grain of salt. |

Um, isn’t saying the issues “were caused by internal system problems” basically the same as saying “we f&@ked up and it took us a while to figure out what the problem was”
A problem this far-reaching should not be happening to a company that has been operating in this space for over a decade |

I'm just glad those giant subtitles aren't a permanent new feature.

Yep. It makes me wonder what someone on the business side decided was worth changing something that was working, and was at least something that stood out as better than the competition. |

This is pretty normal though. It’s always been a coin flip whether or not onscreen text will get translated so I’m not sure why people are acting like it was always a given. |

I've got some bad news for you about every tech company ever. Maybe someone pushed an update and it broke an API. Maybe some third party tool they used was updated and it broke the flow. I had a client change on field in JIRA and it broke everyone's trackers. A Crowdstrike update bricked entire airports for hours. Shit happens.
Yeah as much as it annoys me, it's not like other services have been great or consistent about this either. |
