Yay, nice to see more old school anime being talked/discussed on there.

Reading Another and then looking through the anime just made me really annoyed to be honest. I get people are always annoying about “the book is better”, but man… the bones are mostly the same but the changes that are there make the story more schlocky and fit it better into traditional anime tropes. Additional deaths, more gruesome deaths, changes to the mechanics of what’s going on that contradict the source material for the sake of all that, none of it sits well with me. More power to those who like the anime though.

That's an Emu. We don't have Ostriches in Australia outside of zoos (except for, like, the rogue ones that wander the outback after failed farming programs)

Re Another: I love the anime and I enjoyed the novel but I feel they're very different beasts. The anime is so corny in a weird way (the final episode is my favourite), whereas the novel is a bit more lowkey (but still violent of course). I really should watch Another again... I only read the novel a year or two ago so it's been a long time since watching the anime back when it aired.
I also liked Blood-C and Mayoiga though so clearly the director's style appeals to me.

I'm gonna have to look up that Ixion Saga show, poorly aged or not. I just finished Konosuba and my well of isekai parody is running dry!

Is it really a gift if it's available for streaming? Because I guarantee that's the only way they were able to watch the Another anime. All the media is OOP and now in or close to the triple digits price wise.

I remember watching Azumanga Daioh for the first time convinced I wouldn't laugh at any kind of Japanese humor and was blown away how god-for-saken hilarious it was, to the point I had to catch my breath numerous times. It is now up there with the greatest comedy series of all time on both sides of the Atlantic/Pacific. I bought the omnibus of the manga to see from where it originated and THAT had me rolling. When people ask me for my favorite anime comedy I give them Azumanga Daioh and to get ready for grounded mind blowing absurdity. It's easily in my top 10 favorite anime.

Just a quick note for anyone who may’ve missed it, Sentai just released a new Azumanga Daioh blu-ray collection (just got my preordered copy yesterday) so if you haven’t added it to your collection yet, now’s the time to do it.

Ixion wasn't on my radar at all, but I own and like the other three.

It feels weird that Another is on Crunchyroll now when that was a Sentai license. I often like to watch my DVDs for Halloween season because I find its overdramatic and ridiculous deaths hilarious. Umbrella is great, but I also love the beach. Very Happy

The beach is my second favourite death scene. It's just so funny. I feel like that was where the show truly started going off the rails.

In all honesty, Azumanga Daioh was probably my gateway drug into anime fandom — specifically, via its popularity on YTMND, with pages like these:

https://daftpunkosaka.ytmnd.com/
https://azumangaosakashoe.ytmnd.com/
https://azumangaipodalternate.ytmnd.com/
https://azu.ytmnd.com/ (warning: flashing lights)
https://chiyo.ytmnd.com/
https://azumangaspinme.ytmnd.com/
https://chiyoarmy.ytmnd.com/
https://snowballofdeath.ytmnd.com/
https://tomowins.ytmnd.com/
https://iehhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.ytmnd.com/
https://osakasataandagi.ytmnd.com/

And, of course, like Lucas said:

https://azumangomg.ytmnd.com/

(Note: The sound doesn’t seem to be working on mobile, at least on my iPhone SE.)

In retrospect, YTMND culture was really the closest I ever got in the mid-2000s to 4chan culture.
