Thank to Time Stranger, I'm totally back into Digimon right now and Beatbreak did not disappoint. The best thing I can say about it right now is that it reminds me of Tamers. I personally love the idea of Digital Monsters encroaching on the real world. Gekkomon has been a joy. I certainly look forward to seeing more.

It's interesting how a great entry point from the video game side of the franchise (a side of the franchise that tends not to be very newbie friendly) and a great entry point from the anime side of the franchise appeared at the same time. It wasn't even really planned. While I assume Time Stranger's release date may have been adjusted once a release timeframe was assured, the game itself was stalled for years.
In any case, as for the anime itself, while I learned to love Masaru from Digimon Savers (by the same main writer) by episode one, I'd say I only liked Tomoro at episode 1 but episode 3 is the point where he ended up feeling like one of my favorite protagonists in the franchise, though we'll see how he turns out. I'm obviously not expecting a Masaru 2.0, but I think he'll be one of the most memorable MCs of the franchise in his own right when all is said and done.
The setting itself is definitely one of the most interesting human worlds the franchise has done if not the most interesting. I think it'll still be great if this was one of those seasons where the Digital World itself didn't play a major part since they could probably just center the series around the World Union and government conspiracies to have plenty of content for a 4 cour season, but I hope the Digital World is important. The first few seconds of the op are very interesting; I wonder if the season will directly state what they imply. I personally think they will make it clear.

I am problably one of the few that loved Ghost Game for what it is, instead of what many imagined what it could be.
So I was really excited for this new entry and so far it has been great.
My only main nitpicks are the "Beat" theme that has only showed at Tomoro's introduction and this episode piano flashback, there isn't anything that ties the rest of the cast to it.
Also that Reina and the blonde kid (I can't even remember his name) have been put into the back burner to let Tomoro shine. I also fear for Kyo's something in Murasamemon and the OP makes me fear he has inherited Leomon's curse.

I liked Ghost Game too. Not many shows have me coming back every week for multiple seasons, so it was doing something good. Not sure I agree with the reviewer calling it horror for kids. Some episodes, like the one with the mushrooms, may have given me nightmares if I would have watched it as a kid.
Kyo is a mentor figure and vastly more powerful then the rest of the cast. So I too think he is in danger.

"For kids" doesn't have to be seen as reductive. Good kids' media can also just mean "good media" and I agree there are some episodes of Ghost Game that were pretty disturbing even watching them as an adult. Just also not a fan of exaggerating what a show's target demographic is intended to be. Even Beatbreak is largely intended for kids, and it would be wrong to downplay that just because it also happens to be pretty well written since kids deserve good writing too.
Also doesn't mean there's anything wrong with adults enjoying kids' shows. If anything, the fact that Ghost Game and Beatbreak have some appeal outside their intended demographic is a sign of how well they've been handled

| Quote: | | Not every episode of a show needs to be constantly pushing the story forward, and sometimes it's just nice to get something laid back that's a lot more focused on building chemistry between characters or just plain goofing off doing something fun. Having some downtime can make the bigger moments of a series more effective, and for longer-running shows like this one, being able to strike a good balance between good one-off episodes and major story beats is usually more effective than trying to make something important happen every week. |
Thanks so much for summing up why I miss longer shows like this, or even shows that actually bother to show the characters doing more laid-back stuff outside the main plot! It's a nice way to get to know the characters outside the main conflict! One of the reasons I love the 2002 Tokyo Mew Mew anime is that it bothered to give time to other characters besides Ichigo, who admittedly got way too much time in the spotlight at the expense of all the other characters, even the other Mew Mews. Now if only Gundam Wing got this message, I'd enjoy it a lot more than I do.

There used to be a time when monster/villain of the week shows/episodes were really popular, and it’s a shame that it isn’t the case nowadays. I understand that people felt burned by Digimon Ghost Game, which overdid it, but episodes like this are important to get to know the characters better. The Digimon Adventure remake could’ve used more downtime.

Maybe it's just this episode's focus on motorcycles but I cannot stop seeing the Yugioh 5D's influence. It makes me wonder if anyone on the production staff is a fan. Destroyed city, clear class divides, heavy government enforcement...old dude in a floating chair. Really been elevating the series for me.
I wouldn't say episode 4 didn't move the plot along. We've established that whatever this organized force in the background is, it's willing to go after human resources too, not just Digimon.

Episode 4 is the kind of episode we can have because this is a four coure show, and it's better for it.

Episode 5 for me was already a bit of a comedown from the last 4 (really think we needed more episodes establishing team dynamics before Tomoro wandered off on his own into Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo), but what solidified that was repeatedly translating kyodai as "sibling" which drained all the big moments of the second half of any potential weight

Episode 5 was just decent overall but it works well as build up for episode 6. I'm definitely excited to see where they are going with this season. I thought the season would be more episodic for a while starting with episode 4.

Some world building in episode 6, so this series has its own version of the Elite 4, only they are 5 of them, so some one up men ship there.

I was surprised by episode seven since I was expecting a more low key episode after episode 6. The anime is definitely still in the intro stage, but it's very engaging nonetheless. It does a good job of introducing a new mystery just when one is solved for a good feeling of progression. I certainly can't wait to see Kyo's backstory is.

Suspected as much from the preview, but it's funny that episode 8 is basically a Ghost Game episode

That girl from the first episode is back to get more abuse from the show. Someone get her a Digimon bodyguard, or will she just be the Naru of the show.?
Next episode, looks like we are going to meet the first of our Elite 5 as I like to call them.
