i don't even think this was the first time sony has been in a situation like this. i think a while ago, the company was under fire because of allegedly a bunch of crunchyroll account emails and passwords were leaked...

...i even think they changed their tos at the time to shift the blame from them onto you after that...

...sonyyyyyy...

If this is true, then they may have been getting sexually suggestive or worse emails or other targeted marketing.

Sadly, things like settlements and promises to do better don't do much to deter bad behavior when a company stands to make more money that the settled amount. If they can turn an overall profit and admit to nothing, they will continue to do it.

Personally, I can think of a lot of better uses for $16 million that Crunchyroll could have used to improve its products and services for customers instead of selling off their data.

there's a laundry list of shows i want on the platform, for example... minami-ke, as we've discussed previously no-rin, the first season of dagashi kashi, genshiken, me and the alien mumu...

but instead of doing that, they did the opposite like delisting b gata h kei, save me lollipop, pani poni dash, gingitsune, and most of these were unexpectedly delisted...

so, yeah...same here...

MAYBE with the fifth season of minami-ke coming up, they'll probably care and relist others, especially with oshi no ko 1 (now streaming) and 2 (coming) as well as the other show that came to the platform, but still...i'm not really confident.

probably gonna break something if gj club ever gets delisted. like, my favorite show of all time getting delisted is madness (but not impossible either).

Well, I assume they have a decent amount of European users as well, and while I'm not sure if there's a direct equivalent of VPPA in EU data privacy laws, if they do pick up a case, I don't think there's any need to worry about the fines not hurting..

Seems like Sony (by proxy through Crunchyroll) is in some hot water once again with regards to data they shouldn't be sniffing and selling off. How many times are they going to go through this brand of insanity? Rolling Eyes

no. this leaked user emails and device IDs. None of that is needed for ads stuff. Either way, it's illegal. They're supposed to anonymize data they sell

Even if that's the case, it's never good, since now another company has your info, and in this day and age, who knows who they'll sell it to next?

I’m rarely surprised when Crunchyroll has been caught with their hand in the cookie jar. I was more surprised by them delisting Noragami.

Exactly what I was thinking. There are a lot of license renewals they could buy for that kind of money. Same with bothering to produce discs and store them at that warehouse in Iowa. $16 million would have gone a long way towards any of that.

Did they really think they could sell data to third parties without dotting I’s and crossing T’s in an era where data breaches are the biggest concern for It security?
