Sony owns the IP 100% so they have the final say in it. Miyazaki has shown an interest in doing a re-master for modern PC's and consoles but their hands are tied.

A few episodes of Primal convinced me Genndy Tartakovsky would make an amazing adaptation of Bloodborne, but I also think he’s in the proverbial doghouse at Sony after the Fixed fiasco.

The challenge of adapting silent protagonists very rarely works out, especially from Hollywood studios who seem to go hard in the other direction of making them very quippy and snarky which often feels out of place.

An older YouTuber from the early 2010s. Absolutely hilarious to see his name attached to something like this.

This movie would ensure that at least a remaster happens so that they can take advantage of the sales boosts that typically happen when a movie or show comes out.

I'm glad that it's animated and not live-action, but unless Miyazaki is involved, I don't see it working. Without the OG writers or anyone strictly paying attention to the lore, the movie will just end up being a glorified video of some random player's headcanons. Also 1 film will not be enough to cover the whole story, so I really hope they aren't going to attempt that. If these guys really want to nail a Bloodborne film, they should just make it a prequel about Gehrman, Lady Maria, and/or Provost William.

You know what? I love both Bloodborne and Primal, and this never occured to me. Makes perfect sense now that you raise the point. I was very skeptical of a BB adaptation but this could actually work, in part because of the silent protagonist issue and the fact that it's animated. A project such as this definitely needs an auteur touch while remaining faithful to the original creator's vision (ideally with their creative input). I say that, but I'm still on the fence about the Alex Garland directed live-action Elden Ring.

There's that, and then also the fact that apparently remastering the original wouldn't be as easy as just updating textures and upping the 30 FPS to 60 FPS, because of the original gameplay design, which could potentially have an impact on fights if framerates are uncapped (for example the dodging mechanic). There are a few videos on YouTube diving into the technical specifics. Apparently that's one of the issues with a potential PC port of the original game (even though unofficial mods exist), in addition to Sony's owning the IP. Maybe they're considering a remake à la Demon's Souls (PS5), but Bluepoint Games is no more and I don't know what Miyazaki would think of that. Most fans were expecting some announcement for the 10th anniversary of the game last year which didn't happen (wasted opportunity), so it really feels like Sony were just sitting on the IP... for this?

You'll more likely get a Bloodborne GAAS under current Sony.

But it'd be really funny if the movie released and The Duskbloods on Nintendo Switch got a big sales bump! Laughing

Bluepoint did pitch a remake, but Miyazaki declined as he was too busy, and he wouldn't allow a remake unless he was 100% involved.

As a complete outsider to this franchise, I'm cautiously excited for it. It's surreal to see Sean's Youtuber name attached to the project, but hopefully that will ensure some genuine passion goes into the adaptation and not just corporate mandates.

Between Markiplier, Pewdiepie, and now Jacksepticeye are we entering into the age of YouTubes going Hollywood?

That could have been really cool (with Miyazaki's involvement). Not everyone liked their art design changes for Demon's Souls (and things like the inclusion of a photo mode which can potentially impact gameplay), but there's no denying it was a technically impressive remake that was generally faithful to the original. Now that the studio is no longer active it's hard to see who could do this with Miyazaki's (theoretical) approval and hands-on participation... unless Sony does this in-house?. I guess a remake remains a pipe dream for the time being, but maybe the animated film will change things.
