That was a fun interview. I'd be interested to know if he's seen Dr. Stone, Planetes, Space Brothers or even Irina: The Vampire Cosmonaut, et al, and whether series like that would drive him to distraction when they take liberties with the science to further the story, or if he'd just laugh it off and enjoy the ride.

Mr. Love, our workplace watches The Weather Channel on a massive screen and they were showing footage of you guys there live. We had about 100+ dorks in that room, women and men, young and old, screaming about the Artemis plush. My 70-year-old coworker who loved Sailor Moon (and not much else lol) was emotionally moved by the thought that her beloved anime has made any impact on the people advancing humanity beyond her years. She passed away last month, and being one of my last exciting memories with her, that moment will stick in my mind until the end of my days as well. You are greatly appreciated. <3

I've been speaking with him and yes, he's seen a lot of those and generally enjoys them...even when the science is silly. I'm sure he'll weight in when he gets a chance to read this!

Thank you for sharing this. I know Stan will be reading it, too, since he's a huge ANN fan.

Dr. Love, if you're reading this, I just want you to know that Diebuster is some outstanding taste in anime.

Wow, I never thought ANN would score an interview with an actual NASA astronaut and asking him about his love and connection with anime. I have to say, this is impressive. Thanks for doing this ANN.

Has Dr Love ever exhibited his car at a con or itasha event before?

What a fantastic interview! I love that the conversation not only drew out his experience as an anime fan and how it plays a part in his life (his car is bad ass!), but also his experiences as an astronaut and being a part of mission control.
I rewatched the Artemis II launch right now and damn, it is so COOL! Especially the final minute and a half of the count down. The part right after lift off where the announcer says "Humanity's next great voyage begins!" always makes me hot behind the eyes :')
Something else that I've always loved that Star Trek, anime, and NASA space missions have in common are the call outs hahaha :D I always love that everyone on the bridge in Star Trek calls out what they're doing, I always love hearing the call outs and responses between mission control and astronauts, and in all the years I've been watching anime, it still excites me when characters in anime call out their special moves (ESPECIALLY when they're about to defeat their opponent) XD
If by some chance Stanley Love checks out this forum, I would like to say one thing and ask one question....
First, congratulations on a successful mission and thank you for helping bring about the next age of space exploration for a new generation.
Second, I would like to ask.... when you listed the attributes that make up the code of professional ethics for flight controllers (discipline, confidence, competence, responsibility, teamwork, and vigilance), there was one attribute that slipped your mind at that moment. Could you tell us what that final attribute is please? Not knowing that last one feels like I'm reading a book and I've just discovered some of the pages are missing hahaha :)

Hello, Dr. Love here. Thanks for everyone's thoughtful responses to Erica's writeup of my interview! This is my very first forum post on ANN, so apologies if my etiquette is poor. Quick answers to questions above: Gina, I love Dr. Stone, Planetes, and Space Brothers. Especially the last, since it's so well researched. Also I talked with the mangaka for an hour and a half when he visited Houston years ago and he seems to have named his character George Love after me. I haven't seen Irina. Juno016, thank you for sharing the lovely sentiment. Tunod, virtual fist-bump for Diebuster appreciation. The scene on my car, where Nono awakens as Buster Machine #7 (and discovers that the thing she longed to become, she always was) is my favorite in all of anime. I just love that message. mdo7, I think the message is that anime touches lives everywhere, and all fans want to share their experiences. Omoikane, fist-bump for Nadesico appreciation (deadpan child-genius Ruri, the most mature person on the crew, is my fave.) I showed my car at Houston Comicpalooza's itasha showdown last year and won a trophy for best electric car! (OK, it was the *only* electric car. But a win's a win.) L-S-M-F-T, pray-hands thanks for the congrats. The missing element is Toughness. Shame on me for missing it when put on the spot. All, be excellent to each other and party on.

I don’t remember if he was physically at Comic-Con a few years back, but the NASA booth had a pile of autographed pictures of him, so now I have an autographed picture of him, and it isn’t one of those printed autographs, it was actually signed with a sharpie.

Nuh-uh! You posted in the Dirty Pair Kickstarter thread a few months ago.

Very cool! I wonder if you influenced Inagaki-sensei in naming Stanley Snyder as well.

Ah, I stand corrected on the earlier post.
I haven't met Inagaki-sensei in person, so I doubt I was on his radar for character names.

100% agreed. The thundering drums of Tanaka Kouhei's music, the gorgeous animation, the triumph of the moment itself, it's peak anime.

Just an amazing interview. I love it when anime gets in the news in a positive way!
