It's josei, not "shoujen," whatever that may be.

It's weird that anime has those bins anyways right? I hope I'm not alone on feeling that.

Wow everything in Iran sure is brown. Reminds me of the "Mexico is yellow" thing. Remembering how colorful Persian architecture and fabrics can be that feels like a bit of a loss, but I guess it's a small thing. The scene where the mistress finishes mourning and gets to wear color for the first time could've been a stunner.

I know enough history of this period that I could have a go nitpicking here, but why would I want to?

A novel setting. While the animation style isn't a personal favourite, its novel, creative and has beautiful backgrounds. Lots going on and charmingly delivered. I'm sure I'll watch all of this.

Episode 1-2

Easily my favourite of the new season and it's hard to imagine dropping this. It's a harsh story, for sure, but the visuals soften it... a bit. Love the exotic setting and time period. Will definitely be looking forward to this every week.

Yeah, this one's a winner. Its visual style is so distinct that it didn't really feel like an anime to me, but that wasn't something I was complaining about. The way the first episode emphasized the lead's resourcefulness and vulnerability at the same time...the depiction of a chaotic world and a desire for some kind of order and security...it made for a pretty intense experience.

I’ve been looking forward to this since I first saw the distinctive art of the manga in Japanese, long before an anime was announced.

I’ve got to say that I love the font used in the opening credits — a hybrid of kanji and Arabic scripts that’s appropriate to this series (I assume no one would recognize Mongolian script, if there even was one in this time period and context — Wikipedia tells me Genghis Khan captured a Uighur scribe who adopted the Uighur script to write Mongolian, inventing a script that is used to this day).

Also, the throat-singing elements of the soundtrack are pretty cool.

The semi-surrealist art style and type of historical story remind me a lot of (The) Tale of Heike, another fine Saru production. It's also a little ironic that this show is pushing for the whole "wisdom is beauty" thing, when I recently saw Disclosure Day (2026), my fave film of the year (so far). Not a full plot reveal, but only the relevant parts to what I think the tie-in is:

In Disclosure Day: spoiler[ the film begins with Earth on the brink of World War III. A secret organization has kept the planet's contact with aliens a secret for 80 years, but a guy, Daniel (Josh O' Connor), who used to work for this organization wants to spill the beans to the entire world. A seemingly random weather lady, Margaret (Emily Blunt), encounters a cardinal (bird), then suddenly has these waves of knowledge that she can't control.]

(still Disclosure Day) spoiler[ She becomes entangled with Daniel on this adventure to meet Hugo (Colman Domingo) who has orchestrated this whole disclosure day deal. The random waves of knowledge also come when Margaret gets into tense situations where people are either trying to chase or detain her. But when she looks at them, the knowledge waves reveal everything about that person. She then uses said knowledge to reveal truths, and therefore, disarm them, completely extinguishing any tension that person had.]

(last Disclosure Day) spoiler[ In the end, when the news of the of alien contact becomes public, the truth of it all disarmed humanity into not wanting to initiate a third world war and averting said initial crisis. The basic moral of the story: with knowledge comes the truth, with truth you mitigate/destroy the concept of "the unknown," aka fear, and without fear, the possibilities for oneself (or even humanity) are endless.]

I don't know that this series will get quite that poetic about what knowledge can do for humanity. But as steeped as the culture of this world (in the anime) seems to be with older religious beliefs and societal roles, I'm interested to see where they take it, once Sitara starts learning more. Heck, I also wouldn't be opposed if it also turned into a Count of Monte Cristo story, where she just learns so much for the sake of vengeance.

But yeah, the tie-in of knowledge being power (or in the case of the movie, the power to disarm) has me intrigued where this anime will take that concept. Maybe I'm just reading too much into it, and it won't be something as poignant. I do wanna' see where it goes, though. Science Saru has two absolute gems in-the-making this season.

Earlier I expressed my doubts about this series sucess, that it could not give what some people could expect. Hard to explain but...
But now, after watching this episode 3... how they say? "It elevates the source material"? In anime form it was easier for me to understand all the "symbolism" here (if I'm not only imagining things).

This whole episode talked about Star and Fire.
Sitara means "star", and she changes her name. Symbolically she "eclipses" who she is.
Fire purifies and is also used to detect "evil", as proved by Töregene presence.
The Eclipse was more complete the more at East. East where the Mongols come from, as if it's saying there is no Fire there to purify evil, the Mongol themselves.
But now Fátima, the Eclipsed Star arrived there.
And maybe the Moon doing the eclipse is also relevant, as is a symbol of Islã, and Fátima will use the knowledge achieved from Islamic research to do her deed?

Looks great, characters and circumstances still drawing me in and very interesting and we are clearly moving towards Mongol court politics where, presumably, the rest of the show will sit.

I'm a little confused as to what the ultimate direction is. The concept seems to be I guess that they are internal enemies to the Mongols, but in 1221 they can't then achieve anything meaningful given a quarter century of almost continuous victory still lies ahead? They could make them responsible for the 1259 civil war, but boy, thats a long game for an anime/manga to string out...I feel like a story of individual striving is the more interesting direction.

This could always go into alternate history territory (if it hasn't already) but these are historical names of real people you can Google to see how their history played out

That would have been smart of me, wouldn't it? Well doubt the anime will get that deep but I get the picture. Thanks!
