if it's a cutesy up beat show, I love the bright vibrant colors, and the wide-eyed expressions. I love the happy squeaky voices. They always bring a smile to my face.

If it's a dark, serious show, I love the atmosphere, and the jarring plot twists. I love getting swept into the world and the narrative and not being let go until it's at its end.

If it's a mindless, frantic comedy or action show, I just love being at the edge of my seat being dragged along for the ride, enjoying every minute of it.

I love the upbeat anime themes (or not so upbeat), again, they make me smile.

Why do you love anime?

That's pretty simple for me- I like animation. The way I see it, if I want a 'gritty example of real life on the mean streets' (or what not), I don't need to turn on some drama movie about gang warfare... I just need to watch the news. (This came up when I went to Disneyland a couple months ago, and we saw some LA news... 12 stories about murders before we got to one where someone didn't die... they were injured instead.)

When I sit down for my entertainment, I don't want reality. I don't want something that looks like reality. I want to escape reality for an hour or two... and nothing does that more effectively than watching 2D drawings move around. Very Happy Anime fandom is a natural progression of that- since most of the readily accessible American animation is geared toward a child audience, anime provides a ready supply of more mature/varied material to satisfy my older palette. (And without falling into the psuedo-mature trap of works like Heavy Metal that hide less-than-stellar plots under heavy trappings of sex, blood, and drugs.)

Does this mean I won't watch American cartoons? Of course not. I do enjoy the Fairly Oddparents on Nick, which has some very clever stuff in it for a kids show (I love the comic-book-style, oddly worded 'sound effects'). If Freakazoid came out on DVD, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. And I do enjoy catching American Dad and Metalocalypse on TV now and then. It's simply that, for the kinds of stories I want to hear, told they way I want to see them, I generally have to turn to Japanese animation. That's all there really is to it.

I believe the greatest draw for me would be the notion of immersing myself in another world. It can be a world fantastically different from earth (Last Exile), or one deceptively similar but still intriquing (Haruhi Suzumiya). Either way, I guess this kind of fantastic escapism sorta appeals to me. Sometimes, just the design of the world the anime is set in interests me more than the plot or characters. Last Exile is a great example for me, the world they portrayed was just breathtaking. Perhaps I'm just too bored by normal everyday life, and wish I could live somewhere more exciting...

Originally I didn't care much for animation quality, as I rather enjoyed to visualize my own version of the world instead. However, I confess that Kyoto Animation has begun to shatter this view of mine. Quite simply, their beautiful art is just inextricably linked to the richness of the characters, the quality of the plot, and the wonders of the world. Meh . . . KyoAni never ceases to amaze. I daresay they made me fall in love with anime all over again. (yeah, I'm currently following Kanon 2006 >.>)

Up until I met NGE, I had never seen any animated series take such a serious edge when storytelling. That's what drew me to watching more, and then it was just a chain effect--I'm partial to the idea that the things you like, you learn how to like them. So for me, enjoying anime is something I got accustomed to. I ever started watching shows I thought I'd never do when I started--typical mahou shoujou-flashy types, or even heavy shoujo stuff. So I guess here it was more like growing accustomed to it, and I wouldn't really know what do I love of it.

I always thought of anime as an escape from reality.. back when I was younger when I had my first taste of anime (around 9 or 10 years old) until my college days (now I'm 20) I would imagine how it would be like if I were a character in a series I'm watching.. I would think that things would be easier that way..

Then also I try to think of the all the work animators put into an anime.. I wanted to make my own manga/anime for years, but the question is, can I do it? these behind-the-scenes people can and want to do what they're doing.. that's very impressive, and the only way you can repay their hard work is to see it in action and appreciate it..

watching anime also inspires me to pursue my interests.. I was so busy with college life until now, when I finally found time to get back to my old anime - loving self. I have gotten in touch with my artistic side once more (drawing anime, writing, etc) and it's still fun..

and that is why I love anime Laughing

Pretty nice question.

I was but a kid when I first saw anime, and watching it made me forget my trouble in school-- being rejected for being different and not knowing much Spanish.

Later, it helped me get near to one of my classmates, who was easily the best painter in the classroom.

After she left, I kept on practicing alone, I took some manga drawing classes, and I learned there was a lot of people out there who did like what I liked. I'm still drawing and watching anime (FYI, I never liked American series, not even as a kid, although I DO enjoy The Simpsons and Futurama [I owe Bart Simpson one Anime hyper)

So, why do I love anime? Because it made me into what I am!

why?!

I really don't know the reason why I like it!
I just started watching it...
Maybe it's the animation + story that made me urge so much about it!
Also, I like the imagination that was put in every anime that an animator made.
Plus, anime shows have catchy Songs!!!

I first started watching anime to see totally unrealistic stuff (back when I was 14 or so) like Goku going all super saiyan and power attacks, for the cool factor of Gundams, and of course for space shows like Cowboy Bebop. I was and still am very interested in sci-fi material, whether it be novels, anime, or Hollywood magic. But Hollywood never put out a lot of good sci-fi (all that they did I devoured), and anime allowed me to see the fantastic space battles between spaceships/gundams/etc that I have been reading and daydreaming about for some time. Space shows and general futuristic stuff is the first genre of anime I got into, and I still hold that genre in high regard. From there I branched out into dramas and comedies, slice of lice, etc. and found a richness in character and plot that came from the multi episode format that Hollywood can't match with a simple 1 1/2 hour movie. That's why I love anime.

Ditto. None of us really live in reality 24/7. While some may be more escapist than others, but whether it be music, imagination, or watching anime, we all have our methods of getting a break from the real world.

I've always loved animated movies, and I never really felt the need to hide it, even if it wasn't considered cool by some friends. I find animated movies (and some series) to show a great deal of artistic merit that more than warrants them being viewed alongside more realistic and widely-praised fare. Many anime contain that artistic merit in spades.

I'll also say that while I got into anime because I fell in love with a few shows, fandom is something that has helped me stay in. It's still a very niche hobby in the United States, and, while I would like it to have wider exposure, I won't deny that that aspect appeals to me. That, combined with the many intellectual and ethical topics anime touches on, has helped to keep my interest going even when I might've started feeling a bit burnt out.

I'm just like everyone else here. I like to escape from reality myself. I mean, the real world has always sucked badly enough for me, and I don't need a constant reminder of how much it sucks for everyone else.

That's how it's always been for me, ever since I was a kid. I grew up with your quintessential kids action shows, such as Power Rangers, which was my #1 favorite show as a kid. I also grew up with the cartoon series of all of the superhero comics like X-Men, Spiderman, The Incredible Hulk, Superman and Batman, all of which I continued to watch into my preteen years. I also loved to watch the more comedic of these kinds of shows, like Freakazoid and Earthworm Jim.

But it wasn't until I was about 8 years old when I caught my first glimpse of anime: about 10 episodes of Ronin Warriors, before the network that was showing it took it off. I was just a kid back then, and Ronin Warriors was enough to just blow my mind, as I had never seen anything like it before. DBZ was the show that took it's place, and I was blown even further away by it! It wasn't until I was about 12 years old that I got to really get into the series when it first came to Cartoon Network, and it became my first anime series that I ever really got into. I found it strange that it and Ronin Warriors were very similar in animation, and I latter found out about the fact that they are both in a genre of animation from Japan called anime, and it was in this moment that I knew I was going to be a fan of anime for the rest of my life.

Of course, even though I've seen far better and more grown up series since, and eventually I lost interest in most of them (I am still a huge fan of marvel comics), I still hold all of these shows in a special place in my heart, knowing I owe them for my anime fandom. They are all also my number one reason for the shonen genre being my favorite genre, seeing as how they are very similar kinds of shows, with shows like Naruto, Bleach, Death Note and FMA being similar shows I can enjoy as an adult.

I basically think that Japan's shonen genre is basically our generation's version of superhero comics anyways, because play the exact same role in our entertainment business. They both apeal to kids while still being dark, complex and exciting enough for us as adults as well, and can give our children a chance to be compelled into a creative world of fantasy that they will always remember.

I'm pretty sure super heroes are still this generations superheroes. Especially since Hero books are (argueably) better than they were ever before. The Ultimate and All Star lines have been great for re-introducing more modern version of characters.

And to the topic at hand, I was big into anime but it didn't last. I love manga though so I guess I can still make post here. For whatever reason Manga and always been able to draw me in a lot easier than anime could. For one I love the art of the books. Pick three different mangas at random and chances are they will all look very different from each other, that just isn't the case with anime. I think it's gotten worse with the advent of digital animation. everything looks very clean now but very souless as well.

That's why 80s anime is generally my favorite, Macross is my favorite show by the way. But anyway, I love how detailed the stories can be during the span of a manga. I generally buy 2-3 volumes a week; and quite often it changes so much it's hardly the same story at all. And that's great, the change and evolution of a story is what I want. And unlike american comics it's rare (but not impossible) for a book to go on just too long. That's why I love manga.

What are you talking about? Star wars, Terminator, Dune, Alien, The Thing, Predator, blade runner, Escape from New York, Jurassic Park etc etc.

Well yeah, but I was basically trying to say that shonen and superhero comics are very similar in almost every way. If you can like superhero comics, it shouldn't be that hard to like shonen.

Why do I love anime? Because I like being part of a fandom and yet not being hugely mainstream. Case in point, I can be an FMA fan and find tons of other people online to discuss and obsess with, and yet if I go outside and socialize (god forbid) with my peers, my tastes in entertainment are still unique. I follow series that most kids my age have never heard of, and are quite frankly better quality than a lot of the soap operas and reality junk that's on FOX and MTV (although I do have a soft spot for American Idol).

Also, I like the 'style' of anime. I know the look and feel of a series differs depending on the creator, but I'm attracted to the general pointiness of it all, and the fact that it doesn't feel like it has to be physically possible. I can draw anime style and not feel bad about making someone's hair look totally whacked out.

Finally, I love anime because it's animation intended for older people. Although I like the concept of animated storytelling, cartoons in America (with the exception of The Simpsons and similar) are really just a pitiful mishmash of kids hating their parents, morons, and potty humor. Anime provides a lot deeper storylines and can leave me thinking for days afterwards, plus so much more work goes into the music and art that it's less jarring to watch. This is part of the reason I hate 4Kids with a passion, because they put effort into taking the effort out of anime.

I honestly can't give any good reason as to why I'm an anime fan; I just became one spontaneously before I knew it and remained that way. Although, if I had to give an answer...

Short Answer: MOE

Long Answer: MOE MOE MOE MOE MOE MOE MOE MOE MOE MOE

Ok time for my boring and sob story as to why I like anime. Short version, only child and a very unhappy lonely childhood. Beat up a lot, tormented, made fun off etc etc. Not many friends, chunky (hadn't discovered weightlifting yet), and anything else you can imagine. Oh yea, can't forget the acne. Joy of Joys what great memories. Needless to say I found ways to entertain myself. I took up reading. Got big into books and comics. Liked being able to escape mentally to another world and hide away. Then I discovered anime. The plots and stories were so much more alive and had so much more depth then most "cartoons." For me it was like those books and comics brought to life almost. I could sit and watch them and escape from my daily hell for a few hours every day. My love for anime has continued to grow since. Though, I do like to think I'm a bit more diverse now with my collection.
