I have been led to believe that the original version of Cardcaptor Sakura has a light romantic story as well as the generic card fighting doodads. Around which episode does this element become noticeable?

Wow! Good question. Well, it depends on who the love interest is. If it is Sakura's first crush, Yuki, then it is from the very beginning. But if you are talking about Sakura and Shaoran, then I would say at about #47 is when Shaoran starts to realize what his feelings are; Sakura being a bit slow. But you could also say that it starts with episode #8 when Shaoran first appears as Sakura's rival. You know how it is in anime when a boy and a girl are going after the same thing.

Whichever one comes first, I'll start watching the series around that episode...I got 15 or so in and got bored waiting for one to begin...

Let me clarify something. I chose #47 because that's when a bit of a rival for Sakura's affections appears.
I'm actually going to have to go back and re-watch everything again now to try and figure out your question. But I do think that you need to watch epsiodes 44 - 46. They will help explain certain things. |

Which others? Yukito and Toya? Well, that's always sort of there especially since they are usually together. But it becomes rather obvious after all of the cards have been captured and Shaoran's other rival appears on the scene. Yukito and Sakura? Well, you know from the first episode that she really likes him. As for Sakura and Shaoran, they start out as rivals, gradually respecting each other for their own particular strengths and began developing trust in each other which leads to friendship. The romantic aspect comes gently on padded feet and works it's way into the heart gently, softly and without notice. It whispers quietly in your heart and ear until something occurs and one realizes one's true feelings. |

There's also the Mei Lin / Shaoran romantic arc, which sees some attention in the 20s and 30s episodes leading up to the spoiler[Judgement] at the halfway point.

I think Shaoran's crush starts to develop at that episode when Sakura captured the firey/fiery card. There was this scene at the end when Shaoran was looking at Sakura and his cheeks start to blush.
I think a few episodes before that one Shaoran's crush on Sakura was already being "implied" though.. |

I thought Shaoran's feeling were really noticeable spoiler[after the Judgement, when Sakura celebrated with the others, especially with him.]

Well at that point it was already obvious to everyone except Sakura..

It starts showing up later in the series (3rd season), but it SPECIFICALLY becomes the focus in the last 13 episodes and continues on into the 2nd movie.
To be specific, it starts at the episode with the spoiler[elevator]. |

Nahhh it's been there before that (at least for Shaoran).. In that episode, Shaoran went one level up because spoiler[he started calling Sakura by her first name instead of her last name..] |
