I am interested in buying YYH: the Movie, but I'm not sure if it would be a great purchase. Is it as good as the series and what exactly is the plot like? Also, I was looking around on the web and found a Yu Yu Hakusho/Ninku Double Feature DVD and was wondering if the Double Feature includes the same movie as Poltergeist Report or if it was an entirely different one. Thanks in advance.

Both are pretty good, in my opinion, and are about as good as the series. Poltergeist Report and the YYH movie on the YYH/Ninku double feature are different movies. The one coupled with Ninku is only a half-hour long and is a funny story involving Koenma's kidnapping. Poltergiest Report is longer and bit more dramatic than that one and is about some demons trying to take over the Earth realm to make it their new home.

I have all the YYH movies...somewhere in my old VHS collection. God that series is as old as the hills. Some of you on this board should hit the P2P networks and get filled in on some new shows.

GUTB, you obviously haven't been around here (or around anime) very long so I'll keep this short and bittersweet.

Most people here at ANN are indeed very well informed of new shows, and many of us LIKE older series because many older series aren't suffering from repetitive artwork, stale character designs, cliched stories, and trite psuedo-intellectual nonsense.

So I suggest you get off your downloading high-horse and try thinking a little bit.

I've been around anime for longer than I'd care to admit.

I've watched YYH from beginning to end, plus all the movies. It's a damn Shounen Jump-style series: Fighting, Training, Winning. The formula is ancient, and so is the series. YYH is as challenging as a bowl of cereal.

There are classics that every new anime fan will probably have to be exposed to. But let's get real, YYH can hardly be described as one. DBZ is one such, and Naruto is turning out to be.

But those that hang around CN for their anime exposure will remain stunted fans until they've went through a number of classics (and yes, some recommended oldies too) and then finally mature into a full-fledged fan, caught up on all the major past shows and movies and following the current season from Japan as they are released.

I never made the statement that Yu Yu Hakusho was a classic. You're quite right in stating that it brings nothing new to the table in terms of story or presentation.

However, calling those who are primarily exposed to anime through Cartoon Network "stunted fans" is both damning and short-sighted. "Fan" is a term only quantified by level of enthusiasm, not by level of experience or amount of knowledge.

I certainly don't follow the current season beyond the season previews here on ANN, NewtypeUSA reports, and the occasional fansub recommended by friends. Instead, I've chose to channel my enthusiasm for anime into research into the anime I have seen and deciphering deeper meanings, in-jokes, and linking different series together. Am I less of a fan because I was a little late picking up on Saikano whilst I was tracking down Area 88?

And, on a side note, we're pro-industry around here so I would advise against P2P promotion.

Seeing as you're clearly a well-educated, well-stocked anime chieftain why don't you lay off the negativity a bit. Give those "anime stunted" fans a chance to blossom into the greatness you've become. Don't slam them down before they have a chance to "bloom..." Everyone has to start somewhere.

Indeed. I've been a fan of anime for the better part of six years now, and I consider myself quite knowledgable. Am I somehow "tainted" and "false" because I discovered Cowboy Bebop through Cartoon Network, continue to watch Inu-Yasha through them, and have not yet experienced such classics as Sailor Moon, Card Captor Sakura, & SaiKano (yet simply because I've been busy going through Blue Seed, Fruits Basket, Full Metal Panic!, SDF Macross, & Rurouni Kenshin)?

Somehow I'm guessing not. But then you're the all-powerful expert, GUTB. Rolling Eyes

Honestly, do you know what you sound like?

"Why, I must not be a so-called super fan of American television just because I'm finishing up Who's The Boss before trying to get into Babylon 5. And excuse me for not finding the time of day to track down the latest episode of Law & order!"

Look, I'm not saying things like CN and hideous dub-overs like DBZ and Sailor Moon are useless, because these often serve as the gateway drug to enter wider horizons (it's been so long I can't pinpoint exactly when or why I decided to go to my local anime club screening, but I'm pretty sure it was right after the Gulf War, probably around 91-93, but I was 'into' anime for longer than that). However, the anime "world" was a lot different then, and it takes much less effort, time and money, today, to enter the wider realm of anime fandom. But things like CN actually serve to stunt the development of new anime fans by offering a wider range of viewing material, and not encouraging a true appretiation for the art. I had a local university anime club with old-time fans in charge of programming as my guide into the upper crust of anime fandom, but todays new fans have no cuh benifit.

Every new fan must pass beyond the gateway drug shows such as Sailor Moon and DBZ and into a wider selection of anime. Among these are the timeless classics such as Maison Ikkoku, Kimagure Orange Road, Nausica, etc., golden oldies of immense charm and class such as Rose of Versailles, Marmalade Boy, Mobile Suite Gundam, etc., and a good sampling of more contemporary classics, such as DNA^2, Evangelion, Gundam 83, first Tenchi OVAs, etc. Then, with this solid background, a fully-fledged anime fan can kick back and leisurely browse the new releases (often within 24 hours of being aired in Japan), follow the state of the industry, and have a well-rounded, critical eye for the art.

Well, it's only an hour or two before dawn, you people want to end this the right way. Razz

CN to me is Waltman Sampler, you only get a taste, and if you like, buy the another one. When I first time I saw Dragonball Z was on CN. Now, that might should like I some newbie running around saying how Goku can kick everyone butt (He can you know. Razz), but I been in to anime before I had cable. Since I like out in the middle of nowhere, anime shops, stores, etc were as easy to find as a rental store that carried an anime that didn't have more blood then the Red Cross has right now. The point is, yes, CN is doing a good job of showing anime and if a tank of blood and a set of nasty words is cut, oh well, buy the flipping DVD or VHS. Or, you can be cheap and deal with it.

Besides, YYH movies rights are still owned for the US, so if you find on a P2P, don't download it.

I would say that DBZ and SM aren't useless. In fact just a couple posts ago you claim that DBZ is one of the necessary "classics" that struggling anime noobs are to see to expand their horizons.

That makes no sense. It takes just as much time, effort, and money to go through anime series and pick out which ones are good, which ones are "classics," which ones are crap, now as it did way back when. Heck, probably even more time now, since there is such a variety of anime to choose from.

CN not only is serving the purpose of exposing people to anime, they are promoting the anime shows in a very appreciative light. Because people are exposed to this anime, they are inspired to go out and see what anime is all about. I don't see how you feel CN is discouraging an appreciation for the art.

From a different thread:
GUTB wrote:
I swear, what's it with you people and these old series?

But in this thread you say:

You are implying that people won't be able to fully appreciate anime unless they watch the older shows. I'm sorry if I sound harsh, but I think that last statement is a load of bull. That's like saying someone who hasn't gone to school can't appreciate a Van Gough painting as much as someone who majored in fine arts can. Maybe I'm reading/taking this all the wrong way, but you are coming across as very elistist, GUTB.

But, I agree with Ataru. This is way OT and back to the subject at hand...
