Main contain mild spoilers, but nothing too revealing.
I received my box set yesterday in the mail, a day before release, and finished it this morning. I was mildly disappointed in some of the writer's decisions, one being that Tenchi and the girls didn't get to kick much ass. I was seriously expecting this big fight scene between Z and Tenchi, being drawn out as much as possible, but of course it doesn't happen. Some good things did happen, though. Sasami gets some action, along with an interesting little confession. I won't spoil that part, though. 
I was sad to see that Petrea Burchard didn't return for the role of Ryoko. Mona Marshall replaces her and does a good job, but her voice is more childish, and kind of sounds like that annoying teenage girl you hear about. Sometimes, though, she's sound just like the original Ryoko. Fortunately, all the rest of the cast returned. Some of their voices seemed a bit off, Mihoshi, Katsuhito, and Noboyuki mostly. Sasami's voice was perfect, sounding exactly like in OVA 1 and 2. Tenchi was quite good most the time, but sometimes you could hardly recognize his voice. I was also quite happy to see that Washu stayed true to herself, but probably because the same voice is used in other series as well. Some people seemed to not like the new art and character designs much. The biggest change was the better quality, as there wasn't too much of a difference with the characters. Probably the most noticeable was how much bigger Ryoko's ears seem to have grown, which somewhat amused me. You get used to it, thankfully. One of my bigger problems with the series is that there aren't really any of those 'moments' with Tenchi and the girls, but perhaps the fourth OVA will have some of those. Lets just hope it doesn't take another 10 years for it to happen. If there are any other Tenchi fans out there who have seen this newest release, let me know what you thought. |

Kajishima originally said he wanted OVA 3 to focus more on the whole Goddess storyline with Z and Tokimi, which started in OVA 2; and that there might be a fourth OVA to finally finish Tenchi's whole woman situation.
I've still yet to watch OVA3 dubbed, ironic because I'm a pretty big Tenchi fan but I still can't get over the fact they re-cast Ryoko. Even if she didn't sound too much like Ai Orikasa's original voice half of the time (she never had Orikasa's girly sound to her voice) Petrea Burchard voiced her in every other Tenchi incarnation, and if it's one thing I loathe it's when actors or VA's get re-cast for ANYTHING except explicitly for story reasons, consistency consistency consistency! |

Probably the main reason I'm such a big Tenchi fan is because it's the show that originally got me into anime. I can honestly remember sitting in front of the TV at my Aunt's house, watching Tenchi Muyo. I was fortunate enough to come across the old SNES video game several years ago, during the time I was trying to remember the name of that one anime show I liked so much.
I'm actually surprised that FUNimation only lost one of their original cast members. It had been quite a while since OVA 2, so they were quite fortunate. In fact, not too long after first hearing about the third OVA, I was able to track down Petrea Burchard's email address. I was even more surprised when I received a response back from her. Needless to say, I was saddened. |

the 3rd OAV was my least favorite of the three (the 1st being my favorite, mainly because of Kagato
 ).
The first disc was good ol' Tenchi Muyo greatness, with new characters that also suffered from a seemingly bi-polar like trait that causes them to snap inbetween nice and happy to downright scary. Iry cracks me up to no end. And I think that Noike pays homage to Kione's character from Universe seeing how she was Mihoshi's partner and only ever snaps at her. I think the main problem I had with it was the whole Misao ordeal. With the exception of that Sasami scene mentioned as well as Ryoko going nuts, that Misao-mini-arc was pretty boring and disposable. Although, spoiler[the reason that their plan ultimately failed was a riot ]
The whole Goddess/dimensional rift(detected!) thing did more to confuse than anything else. And I agree that I too was expecting some kind of battle with at least Ryoko and Ayeka being on the front (like in the Kagato episodes, another reason the 1st OAV is the best ). But, the goddess ordeal was indeed a necessary part for the series as it was preluded to at the end of the 2nd OAV.
Having said that, the Final Confrontations episode as well as the "shocking" revelation revealed about Tenchi's Mother's death floored me!  Even with a series like this, I wasn't expecting that! And then we even get to see Tokimi taking part in the zaininess.
Well, I think I know who at least 95% of Tenchi fans will be rooting for

The 3rd OAV, for me, was a great return to form for the series, undoing a great deal of damage done to the core storyline by half a decade of other folks meddling.
What the 3rd OAV did was give us a further glimpse into the universe Kajishima is revealing. Much like Matsumoto or Oshii, Kajishima is a sci-fi author with a grand vision of a universe where fantasy and science fiction come together. Between the 3rd OAV and GXP, we've been given backstory on the Kuramitsu family and their level of influence within the Galaxy, full disclosure on the intents and purposes of the goddesses, a full explanation on the inner workings of the Galaxy Police, and even been introduced to a completely unexplored portion of the universe in the Renza Federation exposed in GXP's finale! Folks, forget the lackluster TV series that massacred Kajishima's characters, we're getting the real deal here! I'm sorry. Kiyone Makibi was a horrible character and the driving story of Tenchi Muyo is not whether or not Tenchi Masaki loves Ayeka Jurai or Ryoko Hakubi. The driving story is one boy's role in an ever-expanding universe. I can't wait for Saint Knight's Tale and OAV4. This is Tenchi as it should be. |
