I was reading some old editorials, and I came across the "Happy Birthday Encyclopedia" article. The author states that there were 3000 titles that needed to be entered at that time. It got me thinking about the un-entered titles still floating around out there right now. Estimate for me, how many could there be?
And to the staff, how well has the encyclopedia progressed over the past year? Are you satisfied with the amount of submissions, etc.? Is it any closer to where you'd like it to be? |

no one has an exact amount, and new titles are being made all the time. the most commonly agreed upon number (for both japanese and english sources) is about 4000, plus or minus 500. the anime encyclopedia (by stonebridge) has about 2000 titles, and claims that there are another 2000 more. anime checklist says it has 4000 or so, which also matches stonebridge's estimate. according to his numbers (which I believe are probably the most accurate, as of 2001) that means we've got just about all the tv series, but we're seriously lacking in movies and ovas. (to be fair, he also includes experimental anime as 'movies', so there really aren't quite as many as he claims) i have no idea how accurate his ova count is. there were hundreds of ovas that got no attention (or nearly so) because there were just SO MANY OF THEM. heck, it's troubling enough to keep up with the tv series, much less without trying to go back in time and cataloging all the missing ovas.. and let's not get started on the sheer numbers of manga that aren't in the encyclopedia. you could start plowing through the dozens of weekly phonebooks in japan and still never catch up with all the manga that we "should" include. i mean, heck, we don't have guardian hearts or crescent moon (same title, different manga than the one tp licensed; by rei omishi), sanagi to ousama, white present, ai suru ringu, heaven, +1, 2 gatsu no shinkan, or unfinished sonata... and then there are the phonebooks that go under... and so the manga never reaches tankoubon format, and thus is that much harder to find out about (unless you already know about it) and then there are the doujin circles that publish their own manga and games... and the list goes on and on... |

As for me, I'm delighted that we've added two new sections this year to the Encyclopedia. Manga & Events. I hope to see both expand by a large amount in the next year.
I'm very happy with the amount of information that's currently on the ency. Could there be more? YES! We could easily double what's currently in the encyclopedia for content and it still wouldn't be comprehensive enough for some research. As for sections to work on, I'd really like to work on the manga part the most as that's seeing the most growth right now in North America. There's not as many manga news or resources websites compared to anime, so I'd like to see this built up. What I'd love to see is if we can get more contributers. animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/contributors.php |

SInce this is here and I attempted to enter a title may I make a small request? In all the many years I've watched anime I've always called it OVA, not OAV... and the encyclopdia has them as oav's... would it be possible to make it accept OVA and automatically change it to OAV to fit with the encyclopedia's formatting? I sat there looking at my submission for close to 5 minutes wondering what I had done wrong until I looked and saw that I put OVA instead of OAV.
