Cancer is quite prevalent in Japan, Asia in general. Too many Japanese still smoke (well, too many people in general smoke, but the stats say some 52% of Japanese adult men smoke  ), which does not help. Between that risk of lung cancer and the increased incidence of stomach cancer in asian countries, it's not surprising to see so many deaths resulting from the big c. I am not sure what condition this particular artist has, of course, but the way it is phrased does suggest something longterm... and possible serious.
However, it could be something entirely different. In either case, I wish her a full recovery! |

Weird, the first person I though about when I saw the headline was Kyoko Okazaki, Anno's mentor who had to more or less retire after getting hit by a car in the 1990's. Really hope that isn't the case here.
Regardless, best of wishes to her and Hideki. Hopefully it isn't anything too serious. |

She's probably just taking a long holiday because she was working too much and that was affecting her health. She was making AT THE SAME TIME more than two series (Hataraki-man, Moonlight Himejion and Ochibisan, which I suppose is just a 4koma), and she was also writing articles and stuff for some magazines...
It's obvious to me that she couldn't keep up with this rhythm, and a pause of just a couple of months was not enough. Now, if only the ANN staff would be so considerate to CORRECT the mistranlations in the news they put up, I'd be a happy woman
