Hi, with reference to the topic, I am just wondering if anyone could give me pointers on making your own animes?
I love animes, and I might just love them enough and crazy enough to try to make one of my own. LOL. As animes uses alot of still pictures although there are fairly heavy animating as well, I think it might be a worthy try?
My friend says that the basic thing I might need is a good tablet and a program that enables you to animate via key frames. He has no idea what the program is (NO, its not flash). Does anyone has experience dealing with cartoon making or Anime making?
Ultimately I think making one is going to cost lots of effort and time, not to mention experience. I was watching Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu while brainstorming ideas, and I was awed at their art direction. I think Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu has absolutely stunning visuals and details. Good work Gonzo!
Anyway, I just hope that any of you guys might just provide me with some information. Thanks.

Watch Voices of a Distant star, a half-hour, home done OAV.
Also, I'd like to reiterate that it's bloody expensive to do.

ADV currently have it out on DVD, and it's fairly cheap depending where you go.
check the retail forum.

I used to know a guy that's trying to do something similar, but it was video game instead of anime.
But getting to the issue at hand, I think if you're going to try and make a full fledged anime series or movie, it'll take a little more than just one person. Of course, I have no experience in the animation industry, so I guess you could prove me wrong.
As some of you may know, I'm doing a paper on anime, and the first section is about making one. But that's if you go with the general formula in Japan: manga, licensing, production, yadda, yadda, yadda.
So I guess if you want to make a product that you can market (in your case, anime,) maybe you should start with a manga and take a chance at getting it circulated or shown to some head honcho corporation. I'm sure FUNimation will take it and turn it into millions. (FUNimation's my April Fools joke... , but I'm sure they'll take anything.)

This is what I do:
Well, you'll most likely need a couple programs. First, perhaps an image editing program like Adobe Photoshop. I like to handraw my images, and then scan them in the computer since I don't have a tablet, and I suck with one anyway. 2nd, you'll need a video/animation program. Something like JSAC Animation lab or whatever it's called is easy to use, and you can export the files as avi files, or you can use something like Adobe Premire, which will allow you to work on audio and everything else all together.
I've attempted at making my own animated little shorts before, but I get lazy and end the project halfway through.

I'm not very sure on the animation stuff, you'll have to ask someone else, but you do need some kind of photo editing program. I prefer Photoshop 7.0 myself. Lots of people I know like Jasc Paintshop because it is suppose to be somewhat easier to use. Mac programs are great. Finish Touch (an movie program) can handle just about anything you throw at it (no, it's not like Flash).
As other have already said...IT WILL COST A BOATLOAD OF MONEY. YOU CANNOT DO THIS BY YOURSELF. Photoshop and/or Paintshop will cost around $1000. The animation programs are probably even harder to get and more expensive.
Anyways, the most important thing is to not give up and always keep trying.
I wish you a sincere good luck.

Thanks Steventheeunuch, Tony K., littlegreenwolf and sun007. I think there are programs like Photoshop available online. Open source or freeware if I am not mistaken.
As for others, I might just go use a shareware if it is available, or see if there are any other substitutes. Anyway, making anime is just purely for fun, I wouldn't want to market it anyway. Just a work of someone who likes anime, and share it with other people who like anime.
I would appreciate if anyone of you have experience making these things shares your experience making anime? I was just thinking that maybe making a home made video using a video recorder might be easier. Like all the counter-strike fan videos and such, but well, I still like Anime better.

Do programs like this actually exist for use with traditional 2D animation? I know 3D computer animation programs like Maya, Soft Image, etc. animate by extrapolating the motion of an object between key frames set by the animator. I'm not sure I understand how the same concept would work with hand drawn animation. I thought the movements between key frames were filled in by inbetweeners, not some sort of program.
I don't have a lot of experience with hand drawn/cel animation but I've done a fair ammount of work on Maya and some other 3D software packages. It takes forever to make a short animation using one of those programs (I've worked for weeks and weeks to turn out a one minute animation before) so I'd imagine it'll take even longer to do it by hand.
(I hope I got that quote thing worked out right up there, if I didn't, sorry. I'm new here).

I'm an animation student in England just finishing my first year. I just got a copy of Corel Painter 8 which is good to use with graphics tablets and you can apparently replicate cell-animation. its quite a powerful program and you can animate quite easily with it using onion skinning.
For my end-of-year project i'm doing an anime-influenced music vid so i'm gonna be creating/animating 2D characters using painter and making backdrops using 3D Studio Max combining them using after effects. I know Max and I can draw (fairly well) but i'm still learning after effects and painter
another option you could use is a fairly new program called Toon Boom Studio, its a vector-based application similar to flash but a bit more sophisticated. its really easy to use and loads of fun, i did my first project in it.
