A few times recently, I ended up in discussions on the "War on Terrorism" and I felt that the person I was talking to had no idea how wrong things could go (and these were people on both sides of the political spectrum).
It dawned on me that a part of why I could picture really bad things and get my mind around such things was that I had seen Japan "destroyed" many times in Anime and the consequences, usually through unchecked human stupidity.

Has anyone else had any other interesting insights through Anime?

All the Best,

Nani?

However, anime, at best, only presents oversimplified and over-terrible situations and could not be applied to real-life.

If I remember right, Japan was destroyed at least once during the last century due to human stupidity. Real history always provides better insights into the future than fiction.

One of the best insights on war is thru Now and Then, Here and There. The entire story was based on showing 1st worlders war from the eyes of those who fight in the third world.

I say count yourself very lucky you can say that. While the plots of many anime are not "realistic" the portrayals of human misery can be quite realistic rather then "over-terrible". Unfortunately, I say that from being around people who do know.

On this thread in general,

I didn't mean for this to be a "war thread" and looking at my first post, I see why it has become one.
I named this thread "Insights through Anime" because I was interested in how Anime has given yourself different perspectives on anything.
For example, I'll put in a few episodes or Princess 9 when I'm feeling unmotivated. I've heard friend of mine tells his daughter "don't do a Shinji" when she whines. It has been very effective with this twelve year old.
I'm keeping it in mind for when I have kids.

What are your insights,

All the best,

Nani?

I won't try to be too specific here but in general, anime has helped to remind me that friendships may not be forever, and to treasure what I have now.

A friend may leave you one day or betray you. It's all part of life. You either accept it and get on with life or you can grovel in your misery and blame it on an unfair world. The world IS unfair, abd what are you gonna do about it?

Best thing is always be prepared for the worst but hope for the best.

Anime will simplify things in order to condense ths story, but the lessons are still there.

If your looking for some insight into a matter such as this then I suggest you look no further then Grave of the Fireflies

I gained alot of my insights on this from books on Japan, Rurouni Kenshin, Grave of the Fireflies, and much more.

Another insight anime has tought me is to appreciate the finer things in life and not to be so dismissive of things looking so dumb. (ex: thinking anime is just kids cartoons)

It also taught me that the nice does NOT finish last although that may just be wishful thinking.

I really do try to model my life after some people in anime to an extent. I think of Kenshin whenever I'm lazy and suddenly thinking of the hardships he has\d to go through inspires me to do more with myself.

As a matter afact, If I had never gooton into anime chances are I'd be sitting around getting fat rather then getting the modivation to go do something with my life.

ok, let's go back on topic here:
Insights through Anime
I have deleted all ridiculous "whose fault was WW2?" and other political shit. That's some of the most overdone and pointless topics ever, and I didn't want it to waste such a potentially good thread.

One of the reasons I love anime so much is precisely because of the insight it sometimes contain. Even the most mundane anime will usually contain "lessons of life" or something to that effect. It seems to me that almost all anime have a theme built at the core, something that represents the soul of the story.

Take PLANETES for example (awesome anime). There is a clear theme of "how far will you follow your dream?" From that point, during 26 episodes, all aspects of that theme are explored. Giving up an impossible dream, is that good (growing up) or bad (loosing hope)? How much are you ready to sacrifice for your dreams? Your life? Someone else's life?

This is the kind of questions and insight that anime often bring and which I find missing in other forms of entertainment. Especially in long series, it can give very powerful insight to explore themes like dream, life, death, friendship, love, hate, etc. Maybe anime directors are a special breed of human beings with an unusually solid grasp of human nature...

I second that. It also dealt with how space and distance affects relationships between human beings. I especially liked the way the staff took a not-too-impossible concept of space colonization (and debris, you copy?) and its political effect on a range of countries. On the one hand, the prospect of normative / customary space travel seemed to entail significant changes for everyone involved. But at the same time the show revealed that in a way, nothing has changed. People were still being discriminated against in all levels and the political majority still got a bigger piece of the pie. Now THAT'S insight for all you shorties out there.

I love anime forums, because I like to read ironic statements.
