Does anyone know if they are going to continue the full metal alchemist story? I really think Al and Ed should go back home.

I believe there's a couple side chapters she's done, as well as the new movie, but I think the story was pretty solidly finished. spoiler[They managed everything they set out to do, went home, and then left again to set out on a new journey, each on their own.] I'm not sure what else there is to tell.

The story has nothing to continue. FMA reached a conclusion and wrapped up everything neatly and tidily.

It seems that OP saw just 1st series that really seems left half done. IMHO Brotherhood and manga are finished properly.

I'll repeat what the other guys said.

The first FMA series (From 2003) feels unfinished because, basically, it was an incomplete adaptation (The manga wouldn't be finalized until 2010). If you want some kind of closure within that version, watch "The Conqueror of Shambala" movie.

On the other hand, FMA Brotherhood and the manga are pretty much done, with all the plot points resolved (It even goes to the point of spoiler[erasing the "Alchemist" part for one of the brothers]).

I'd recommend the Op to go and watch FMA Brotherhood (Or read the manga) since both of them are pretty good.

I could use some help on this issue.

I watched all of FMA ages ago and enjoyed it thoroughly, however when I decided to sit down and watch FMA brotherhood I couldn't even get past the two first episodes, they were horrible.

Yet Brotherhood has received astonishing reviews, so I just want to know: Is it worth enduring the first few episodes? Does it get better? Is it a worthy adversary to the original series?

Can you elaborate on what was horrible about the first couple episodes you saw. The biggest complaints from some people that saw the first series that I can recall is the first 10 or so episodes of Brotherhood were basically same as the first series.

Maybe. It helps putting aside everything from the first series so you can accept that Brotherhood is the adaptation fans of the manga requested and let Brotherhood be just that.

Does it get better?

Better than horrible, yes. Will you like it? I don't know.

It's a faithful adaptation of the manga so it is worthy of the FMA name. Brotherhood isn't competing against the first series.

Well to keep this short: The reason I didn't like the first few episodes wasn't due to them repeating the same formula of the original run, it was because they betrayed the formula of the original, which to me was flawless.

Maybe it's just the nostalgia kicking in, I don't know.

I don't know what formula you are referring to. I was saying that the first dozen or so episodes had the same content/story as the first series and that some people say it is boring to watch what they've already seen.

Whatever "perfection" the first series accomplished was not the perfection of being accurate to the manga. Like I said before you should put down your love of the first series and let Brotherhood do what it was meant to do. If you are going to hold the first series so close to your heart all your end up doing is getting defensive about it and not give Brotherhood a fair shake.

But if ultimately the first series is your Pepsi then nothing Coke can do to win you over.

Yes, it's worth it. Just don't expect the same mood of the original FMA series. FMA Brotherhood is just different. Not better or worse.

Also, as ArsenicSteel said already, the first 13 episodes or so are a quick recap of events previously seen in the original series (2003). And, to be honest, what happens happens way too fast (But you have the advantage to know these events already).

So, from Ep 14 until the end (Ep 64 if I remember correctly) the series makes a complete shift, with new characters, new plot lines, different people for every sin, etc. It's a whole new adventure that goes on a very different direction. I'd keep watching if I were you, just don't expect something that feels like a sequel to the first series.
