1: in Akira, the explosion in the beginning, was it Akira's powers of was it a "nuke" from world war III?
2: in Ghosy in the Shell, the beginning credits when she is being put together, was the when she was being "made for the first time" or was it her check up or whatever she said they needed?
the reason I'm asking is because in the book Anime: From Akira to Princess Mononoke by Susan Napier she says that it was a nuke and that she was being made for the first time. and it comfused me because I thought it was the other things I said.

I'll have to rewatch the beginning of Akira because I'm not sure about that.
But for GiTS, I'm pretty sure it was her being made. Or at least that's the impression I got. It looked like they made her "skin" and everything...I doubt they would have to take her skin off for a check-up.

To answer the first question, from what I understood of the movie, the First explosion was from Akira, but the official story from the Neo-Tokyo government was that it was caused by a new type of bomb.

On the question from Akira, Tiresias is right, the explosion is from Akira's powers.
As for GiTS, they never do actually explain what the beginning is, so it could go either way. Since they never explained exactly what a "High Level Maintenace" is for their bodies, it might include everything.

1)Akira caused the first blast
2)I think if anything its her getting put together but I always thought that we wernt supposed to know if that has actually happened or not but rather its setting up the whole identity crisis thing and the question "What it means to be human?"In other words its a manifestation of Kusanagi's unconcious thoughts. After all Major Kusanagi is a cyborg not an android and cyborgs are humans who have had cybenetic modifications which would mean she wasn't built at all, that leaves the check up option open.
This is where a directors commentary would be really helpful on the DVD,I dont think you can ever probably understand movies like Akira and GITS without hearing the directors thoughts. Then again thats part of what makes them so great.
