Is the manga simply an adaption or does it have and incorporate any new elements into the series itself?
Also does anyone have any suggestions as to what's worth my money and what to watch out for? I'm pretty much open to all Gundam manga and series excluding Gundam Seed, so suggest away! |

Ergh, the Gundam manga franchise. Isn't there a cluster of those horribly organized Gundam titles that are getting re-released? I vaguely remember some mention of that. Since my Gundam viewing is very limited, I couldn't tell ya if there are extra things incorportated into the manga or not. As far as recommending Gundam manga, I think that if you like Gundam, you'll probably at least moderately enjoy the manga. I haven't read all of them, just random volumes of the different series, though. I've read Gundam SEED and Gundam SEED Astray recently and they were ok...kinda boring to me.

Gundam Seed Astray is looking prommissing. I've read a little bit of it and it seems to be worth at least a little entertainment value.
Alternatively, you could buy the Gundam novels.... though I think it might be hard to find them. They've been out of print for quite a while if im not mistaken. The copies I have are at least 10 years old. Course, thats if you're reeeeaaaly interested in gundam. |

Astray gets good by the second volume, but said volume is likely to lose people that haven't seen the TV series more than halfway through. It actually ties in really closely with events from the series, often making references and emphasising characters that wouldn't make much sense without having already seen it.
The first volume's really dull though. Just a bunch of happy-go-lucky misadventures where everyone in the universe is trying to take Red Frame away from Lowe. Almost deterred me from even bothering with #2. |

The Gundam novels were rereleased in one volume very recently (sometime in the past year, I believe).

I actually do recommend the Kazuhisa Kondo manga adaptation of First Gundam, Mobile Suit Gundam 0079. It's very well drawn, and does much the same what the movies did - removing the Bandai mandated filler from the incredible story of Mobile Suit Gundam.
Basically, it amputates the suck out of 0079. |

There was no suck in 0079 except for 1 or 2 episodes. I'm getting tired of hearing this. The development of characters, plot, and character conflict is so much superior than whats in the movies. I think the movies were mainly made to bring in cash, because scifi was huge at the time. Fact: Tomino wanted the show to be longer than the number of episodes he was alowed to produce.

Yes, and apparently the plan he had literally featured "new MS of the week" on to the very last episode. Really, the Gigan as the Gundam's last foe? |

Sort of. It is indeed true that Tomino wanted the show to be longer then the number of episodes he was allowed. Unlike what you say, the movies were made to express what Tomino "truly" wanted Mobile Suit Gundam to be. If I recall he even stated that he wished it would have stopped at MSG and never gone farther then the movies. However, I highly HIGHLY doubt the movies would have been made to bring in cash. Tomino wanted a better, more finalized version of the series and that what he got out of the Movie Trilogy. Your certainly entitled to your opinion and if you dont like the movies it's fine with me. But they pretty much are the definitive version of Mobile Suit Gundam. |

I got off-topic there.
The Gundam 0079 manga seems like a good idea and I'll probably buy some this weekend. Is it true it's just started being released and only the first 2 volumes out of 9 are currently available? Also, I generally buy my manga at Amazon.com but lately I've been unhappy with their service. Anyone have any better reccomendations? |

Notice how the tv series is the one near the top of every list formed by Otaku in Japan and not the movies. I woudln't consider it the difinitive Mobile Suit Gundam at all. Tomino might, but I think he does have a little bit of Lucasitis. Nothing wrong with that, most of the great minds of fiction don't really think of their work that highly. Not necesarily refering to you guys, but I think the main reason the movies may be more popular in some circles in the US is simply because the tv show is not available in subs.

Lucasitis. I've never noticed how the TV series is on the top of any list by Otaku in Japan. Last I checked, the movies were widely accepted as the definitive version of Mobile Suit Gundam in Japan as well. |

Seriously, I'll say that the tv series is more widely popular and highly reguarded among Japanese otaku. I've seen like 5 lists from Japanese magazines listing the top 100 (or whatever) anime ever and Mobile Suit Gundam the tv show almost always hovers around 1st to 3rd. I don't remember ever seeing the condensed movies on those lists.

It's possible, but take a look at this. http://animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/ratings-anime.php?top50=best_bayesian Take a look at number 48. I dont see anything else Gundam on there *which is a shame* but it shows the movie Trilogy is better regarded in general by the vast population of people which fequent this site. It's not as big as the population of Japan which my prefer the TV Series over the movies, but it does show that there is a following for the movies as well. |

Well, I covered this when I said "I think the main reason the movies may be more popular in some circles in the US is simply because the tv show is not available in subs." But that list is just crappy in general. I really don't think Cowboy Bebop is number one. Of course it is the best rated anime, its the most popular in the US. American fans seem pretty biased to me, because they've only been exposed to what is imported. Japanese fans tend to be more round because that country has been exposed to every anime that exists.
