Personnaly i think it would be good if CR would get on the production committee, that would raise a chance for certain animes to get sequels etc because if its well recieved at their site etc but perhaps not that much at jpn then they would have the chance to make an effort to satisfy the people that watch animes on their site and simply pinch in some money into producing a sequel.
So yeh i hope this deal goes well because i really think it can only benefit to us all, we get more animes and they can get more money...

If I'm not mistaken, the deal is only for Stream rights and there isn't any rule that says that those right can't go to multiple platforms. Like how, many funimation and sentai shows end up on CR at the same time as their own respective outlets (Funi.com and Anime netowrk.)

So, basically, what I'm hearing from this announcement is that all Kadokawa shows will have a legal english simulcast. It doesn't speak to the limitation of the platforms involved just that one is guaranteed to get it. It give crunchyroll more confidence and people reason to subscribe to them.

My kanji-reading ability isn't very good, but I've noticed CR has been in the credits for at least a few shows already. It seems they've only been those low-budget 5 minute short series so far, but they're there. One of them was Magical Somera-chan, and the CR logo was clearly visible. No idea what they were credited for though.

I think in Somera-chan's case they were official streaming partners, or something like that. Bili Bili are a Chinese streaming site that had the same deal for China, as I recall. I assume in that instance it was more they paid a lump sum to have worldwide streaming rights & wanted their name in the credits to show off that fact.

Since Shueisha have been joint owners of Yen Press since the early 00's & Kodansha having their own US subsidiary, Kadokawa buying into Viz almost seems like a better late or never type of deal. Partnering with CR, though, makes me wonder if the other big publishers will do likewise with other streaming services, particularly if it's judged a success by whatever metrics they're using. I wouldn't be surprised if Netflix or Amazon were willing to throw a lot of money at them for the privilege, if the opportunity arose.

In case people are wondering what's BiliBili next to Crunchyroll, it is China's equivalent of Nico Nico Douga, and one of the main anime streaming sites in China which gets about 40% of the simulcast license every season. Now they are joining Crunchyroll in the trend of becoming oversea production committee member.

Although my question is, is that mean Funimation and other simulcast sites are screwed since there is no way they can get any Kadokawa show at least for next year.

You switched them. Kadokawa is buying into Yen Press and Viz is owned by Shueisha.

I say good for any American Anime company that can get in on the committees. Hopefully it will result in diverse content. My only concern for crunchyroll doing it specifically is as a blu-ray collector. I find it extremely depressing when I can't own the series I love on blu-ray. (or DVD if it's old and not available in HD) The only disc I can remember crunchyroll being involved in was a 5 cm per second DVD, not even blu-ray, that they had someone else publish with their translations, if I'm remembering the ANNCast interview correctly.

I can't see them giving the home video rights to a series they are on the committee for to an American competitor, so I hope this means they will be entering the home video market or at the very least they will offer import editions like Aniplex has been doing, or funimation with GITS Arise. I'd even be fine if they just make sure subs end up on the Japanese blu-rays. I'm perfectly willing to put money up for basically any type of release if I really care about the property (even those ridiculously giant ponycan boxes in some cases) but I hate it when I can't pay for the shows I love when they are licensed, like Mushishi, Samurai Flamenco, Mekakucity Actors, ect from Aniplex.

Or maybe I'm wrong and they'll be really cool about giving out home video rights. That would be a nice surprise.

All of this!! Especially the bolded part. Crying or Very sad

However, I think CR will be cool about giving out home video rights, if they do indeed have them. I just get the feeling that it's going to be more of an afterthought than anything else. Like a lot of anime home video releases in NA seem to be these days. This is why I'm just importing stuff that I really want now. I'm not going to ever be able to own Mushi-shi or Hyouka otherwise, at this rate.

If Crunchyroll ends up with the home video rights, it's more than likely that they'd go to Discotek. Mostly because Crunchyroll already gave Discotek their DVD rights for several shows. It's why Free! got that weird split release.

I hope you're correct about the rights. I'm probably more pessimistic about companies in the US market cooperating than I should be after some of the pettiness I've seen over the years.

Since you're actually importing the discs and CDJapan has been incorrect in the past, I hope you don't mind my asking, but do the Mushishi blu-rays happen to have subs? I've been holding out to see if Anime Limited or someone in the UK puts out a release with the subs, as the dialogue is a very important part of the show. If they don't I'll go for the Japanese discs in the end regardless, but if they do have English subs I'll just go that route now.

I can see this being good for anime as a whole, but terrible for dub fans.

My wife and I only watch dubs together. Shame that Crunchy is almost guaranteed to ship their home video rights to Discotek to barebone sub-only release for discs.

Just means less possible hit shows will get a chance for a dub. Sad.
