FIRST ONE! woot! I never was. Anywho:

About the moe fandom in Japan read this article:

http://www.psychologytoday.com/articles/pto-20070319-000004.html

The rant was long and wasn't a rant until the last paragraph. Whenever my dad drops my friends off at Anime North he always says: "I'm entering a new kind of craziness." or "Why are so many men in school girl outfits?" The general public does not know a think about cosplay so we shouldn't punish them. I do agree that one ranter was wrong on Otaku's being smelling, but keep in mind that there is a life outside of anime just like any fandom. I'm sure many wouldn't know what Dior's perfumes are usually called, but in no way should I force that amoung non Dior perfume addicts. (No pun indended. Its one of their perfumes and lipsticks.)

EDIT: some spelling errors

I liked the Oscar the Grouch banner a lot too. I think you were very kind with the way you politely answered some of this week's questions. I literally slapped my hand on my forehead when I read one of them.

Is Mignogna's name really that hard to pronounce for people?

Meh, Flakes of the Week always get me; I mean, do they ever stop and think before sending crap in? Or are some of them doing it for kicks to see if they can get it in?

karaoke subs? What are those? Anyone have a picture?

The Vic question made me laugh.

Whoa there flake. I love anime but Heros and House (american shows) are the shiznit.
I love puppies!

Every week i sit back and get ready for the rant. The week theres a winner I can't wait. Their rant is going to be the best thing since sliced cheese.

To the ranter:
Other conventions where people get their costume on: Star trek, Comic related events, Star Wars, and sometimes Video Games.

I can see why you'd be upset that someone put that on the site. But also be upset at these people who are talking about something they don't know jack shit about. People always love to pick apart things they don't understand. if those radio hosts, the caller, or anyone listening thinks all anime fans don't bathe then they're just stupid.

Every group has odd balls.

nice banner and good job zac. ^^

I've heard on sites like Wikipedia that it is aimed toward 18-30 year old males and sometimes even older, but it makes me wonder when I look at series like Azumanga Daioh, Aria, and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, which are categorized as seinen manga/anime.

Answerman wrote:
those shows are classified as seinen because in this day and age, that's who shows like that are aimed at.

Since when have those shows been marked as seinen? Heck, I've seen sites marking Aria as shoujo.

Those are series that can be enjoyed by a much broader demographics and both genders. It's not like "many older people love it = seinen", or Chibi Maruko-chan would be a seinen series/show.

Those are subtitles of lyrics that appear and/or change color/brightness/contrast with the pace matching (or trying to match) the lyrics being sung.

i'll say this right now: Viz is taking a FAR bigger risk on Nana. i mean they are pushing it to a market they already saturated with shounen staples. i can't even imagine how they plan to promote this.

You know, sometimes people like shows because they're good, not because they fit into some moe fetish of their. Azumanga Daioh, for instance. I know plenty of old men and women who like the show, particularly because it's well written and a nicely paced slice-of-life show that some people can relate to.

It's not all about the character designs that draw people into shows. Some people actually like certain anime based on the overall content of the show.

Yeah, Zac, stop it with your biased journalism! I guess that flake still resents your answer from the last column.

Tell me about it. Well, they have the Shoujo Beat behind them, so out on the mainstream... err... Jeez...

It makes me sad when the truth about Monster is revealed. I still hoping for a license, but obviously, no one wants to take the risk. Wonder if Germany will pick it up.

I'm a bit surprised that first question was even asked. I thought the answer was kinda obvious.

Quote:
Monster is a long-running show aimed squarely at adults and unless someone wants to take a big risk on it, it'll probably remain unlicensed.

I know that's so true, but man, I hate to hear that. I love the manga, so I'd love to see the anime. And I think my mom would really like Monster, but I can't convince her to read manga.

Quote:
"What is Vic's favored deordorant?"

...Why would anyone want to know that? I really don't care what deordorant anyone uses. I just hope that everyone uses some kinda deordorant, because otherwise you'll probably stink. Anyway, honestly I wasn't sure how to pronounce Vic Mignogna's last name either. So I'm glad that was answered.

The rant was really long... I know it's a rant, but jeez.

My, Zac, you seemed calm in answering all those questions even after the anxiety attacks you must have had to go through for con season. Shows get licensed when they get licensed, unless you're trying to get a show and it's sequel, that would be another story for the issue.

but anime just felt like it was not as important. why is that?
I swear this question was better than the flake. Why wasn't anime as important at Comic-con as it was at Anime Expo? Hmm, I wonder.

About the person asking about licenses: does anyone else think this person gets their licensing news from fansub groups? (In other words, this person does not get such news.)

Speaking as a 24-year-old about a month away from being 25, I love Azumanga Daioh. I don't really care what genre it's really considered to be, I just like it. Considering that I found myself liking Sakaki more than the more obvious moe choice of Chiyo-chan, I'm not sure it's the moe factor drawing me in either.

And no, I did not find myself identifying with Kimura. Wink

Vic Mignogna. Name pronounced like "Lasagna." Somewhere out there, a doujinshi artist is hard at work making this into something disturbing.

The Flake: Apparently, this one couldn't stay crunchy even in milk. Very weak, a mild chuckle at best.

The Rant: Not bad, although I suspect from the writer's description that the entire episode might have been a planned joke. Still, I can't disagree with the core point that stereotypes need to have large wooden stakes driven through their hearts and the convention people should lay off the not-really-funny-at-all "please remember to use soap" rules.

Of course, I speak from experience when I say that some of the stinkiest people on earth are normal college students. Dear God, some of my classmates last semester were obviously not very good friends with Mr. Soap and Mr. Water.

In case this question was serious:

Points of interest: Highlighted "mo" in romaji lyrics, with the equivalent kanji also highlight. The "ki" of "kimochi" has disappeared after it was sung, though there's still a shadow effect. There's also a "falling strawberry" effect along with the romaji, since this is from Strawberry Panic, he he, get it?

But it's not a law that all groups have to do it; in fact, one of the most prominent groups has actively vowed not to do karaoke. And to be honest, stuff like this:

isn't "bad" at all. After watching anime on DVD only for over a year and a half before I ever laid eyes on a fansub, I view karaoke as a nice "extra," as in it's nice to have it there, no big loss if it's not. Whether it's fansubs with karaoke, fansubs without karaoke, or DVD subtitles, having some translation of the song is better than not having one at all. So while some karaokes suffer from fansub group ePenis contests, I don't dislike the practice overall.

What I do detest, though, are the fansub viewers who say "DVD subtitles suck because they don't have karaoke" or "I guess this group's translation and subtitle editing is okay, but their karaoke is too plain so I'm getting this other group's releases instead." I've even heard, I kid you not, "Karaoke is a good way to judge how well groups do their main job, translation." Wrong, karaoke is a good way to judge a group's l33t karaoke skIllZ, which don't mean anything if the song translations and the rest of the subtitles don't accurately translate the meanings Rolling Eyes

Hey now, maybe they just don't read ANN and AoD as obsessively as we do. Incidentally, a check of the group sites for the two main groups for H&C show that one mentioned the license, and the other (which hasn't posted any news updates for awhile) but did cut distro. As for Nana, well...one made a mention, one didn't.
