I know I should not judge a book by its cover, but just looking at the cover turns me away. I mean just look at her face with those black soulless eyes...creepy. Moreover, with an overall F, I guess the soulless eyes told me something.

Wow. This is the most negative review I've read on ANN. *whistle*
I've never actually heard of this series, though. Kinda makes me wonder what decisions cause things to get licensed over at Tokyopop. (and not just Tokyopop, I guess) |

Sometimes it's a matter of bundling. A Japanese licensor may say that if a US company wants hot title A, they also have to agree to license not-so-hot titles B and C. It makes perfect sense from Japan's standpoint, as otherwise those less popular titles might never see licenses at all. |

I think that Robin's latest strip of ANNina is really illuminating on the subject of "How and why crap manga gets licensed by Tokyopop". I'm certainly keeping it in mind after this review
 .
But man, Carlo really beat this one into the ground. To think I was passively considering picking this up -- no more. |

After only reading the desscription alone, this manga reminded me of a run of the mill fanfciton. But the cover is the worst, what is with the darkness and such?
TokyoPop, what in the sam hill are you doing these days? Love Hina was excellent, Chibi Vampire is fantastic, Aoi Yori Aoshi was great and even GetBackers was fine. TokyoPop's doing fine with Karin, I don't understand why this company needs to license these generic, bland shojo titles? That would be like having one of the translators make Karin say in the manga "Its so not embrassing". Wouldn't make sense right? |

Reading this review makes me think that the reviewer can't read a manga book. ANN, the more I read your reviews, the less I trust them. I quite enjoy short SUNZEN! and it saddens me to see it got a flat out very negative discouraging F. I've read much much worse manga. Then seeing that people are judging their opinions based on this review alone is like an extra kick while it's down.
True, the cover art is not the greatest. The artist is newer and not as well known, in addition, her style is still being developed, but in a way, that's part of the charm to this series. It's rough and unfinished, but growing, just like the lead character. In the second volume, the artist gets more on track with the storyline and there's plot development. I just encourage people to actually go read the book before shrugging it off by taking this reviewer's words for gold. |

Funny thing is, I actually think the cover art is rather nice-looking. Also, while I do put a lot of stock in Carlo's opinion (similar to mine, etc.), it definitely isn't the sole criteria upon which I base decisions to purchase manga. I happily breeze right through volumes of Suzuka, and that certainly isn't the most highly regarded manga around here. Also, I bought Yozakura Quartet's first volume after the review for that was published, and it received a D for story. Plus there's the issue of disposable income. Hell, if I had enough loose change, I'd probably buy damn near every volume of manga that I ever felt the slightest inkling to purchase. Even though Carlo writes the RTO!! column? Big Hed's right, though. Just because a reviewer gives something a low grade doesn't mean that one shouldn't try it out even if it sounds appealing to them or that no one should enjoy it at all. I can easily decide for myself whether or not something is worth reading, though I do take reviews to heart. (I bought Fairy Tail off a review.) It's good that you have such a positive way of viewing the manga, bearmoon.

Watch your tongue kid, Mr. Santos has reviewed more than his fair share of manga. Look at that cover image, the description and plot, this manga isn't at all good. Have you even read even more one Right Turn Only article? Mr. Santos is a fantastic reviewer and writer, so before you say Mr. Santos doesn't know to read a manga book, I strongly suggest you do your research beforehand. |

I've read the whole series, and I like Short Sunzen. The art is kind of stiff, but I prefer the style to the more fluffy shoujo art...although I guess Matsumoto Tomo does the similar type of non-fluffy art much better. The story isn't deep, but I think it's fun and good for light reading.
