Thanks for the interview. 5 Centimeters Per Second is my favorite film (anime or otherwise), so I can't help but be curious about this remake. I'm wondering when and how it will release in America, if at all.
Glad to hear this director understand this isn't just a romance story. I'll be curious to see if this remake includes details directly from the manga adaptation, since that filled in a lot of the gaps of the anime.

I watched 5 cm/s many years ago, and I mostly remember it leaving me feeling...cold, which seems to put me in a decided minority. I could not relate in the slightest to the idea of a grown adult still being so hung up on an elementary-school crush that he was letting it sabotage his relationships throughout the rest of his life. (I mean seriously, buddy.) The only character I really liked was Kanae in the second part, and I was extremely frustrated that she didn't get so much as a passing mention in the final part. I wonder how I'd feel about it now if I rewatched it this long after the fact, and it's interesting to think about how a more expanded treatment of the material like this adaptation might change things.

Its definitely supposed to leave you feeling cold, and the main character isn't really supposed to be relatable (at least not in a positive way), he's pretty pathetic (in the third arc) and the story finish with him realizing that it was all pointless.
Its just nice to have a story that goes "hummmm childhood love are precious, but they're not that important".

the animation was beautiful and the story......made me feel depressed for a week. The manga gave clarity for the sudden time skips in the anime, but still left the same empty feeling. I pray for those who watch the live action.

It's neat seeing how the director approached it and adapting the full anime into live-action. I'm glad Shinkai enjoyed it.
I'm also curious about the more uplifting ending.

I'm one of those that got depressed by the original film.
Personally I'm more curious about the cinematography for this live action version. This is some interesting insight.
