This was a great review that very efficiently addresses a sprawling and disjointed work. Oshii's directorial quirks are raw and unrefined here, and the viewer can also see him playing around with bringing anime type shots (or even manga panels) into the real world. However, the telling of the story definitely suffers from this. The movie had a radio drama prequel that was to provide back story and context, but like the reviewer notes, all this context is quickly left behind to explore the surreal dreamscape of a strange city. The viewer is left as adrift as our spectacled Anti-Hero.
I love The Red Spectacles as an experience, one that can be deeply felt if Oshii is able to reel the viewer into his world. However, he does not really try that hard to do that and prioritizes experimentation in this film. Worth a watch for sure! If you like this, then try Stray Dog: Kerberos Panzer Cops, which is very similar thematically but a little more straightforward and less comedic. It's interesting how this even involved people so associated with anime in the production.
