Cool, you answered exactly what I wanted to know being an already owner of the DVD release. Claymore is one of those shows that I would consider double dipping if there was something greatly more offered on the Blu-ray. But it sounds like I have a good enough version already. Still, if this was the first time I was buying this show, this would probably be the version I got.

A-, huh? I thought you once said (in fact I know you said this) that the series overall deserved a B+. So what changed for the Blu-Ray version?

Story, A-? So I take it the BD set for this doesn't have any episodes past about 10 or so, where it begins to spiral downward into what could easily be D material? I mean, I'm all for different opinions, but there's too much nonsense in the anime version that they started up and never bothered to address for it to be an A-.

I loved this show, haven't seen a series that kept me on the edge of my seat thinking *anyone* could be disemboweled or beheaded or meet some other grim fate at any second since Elfen Lied.
I wish there were some other new features or something that would justify rebuying it on Bluray but its a great series nonetheless. |

I'm still wavering on this, as I can't make up my mind whether or not the really strong content sufficiently carries the weaker content to prevent it from being dragged down. I do think the series evaluates a bit higher if looked at in its entirety rather than as a composite of its parts, so this time I gave it the benefit of the doubt. The next time I evaluate the series I could well be back down to the B+, however.
I thought I explained that fairly well in the review. Raki's voice in English was irritating and a couple of prominent supporting performances weren't up to par, but I might have overlooked those if it weren't for the weak way a couple of key lines were rewritten. (See my individual review for eps 6-10 for an example of this.) |

Despite the positive, if a bit mediocre, remarks about this series, I still haven't found the time to watch this series...
And you wouldn't believe how skeptical I was about watching Princess Tutu and Baccano!. It took a lot of convincing from friends and critics for me to sit down with an open mind for me to accept ANYTHING that would happen. (Kinda similiar to my first encounter with Koi Kaze, which, thankfully, became one of my ALL-time favorites...) I don't know what it is about Claymore though... Chris Beveridge compared to Berserk, which isn't really my cup of tea... Another issue was, at the time, I wasn't a big fan of Todd (though Sgt. Frog, Soul Eater, and Druaga helped out with that...). Maybe I have the same problem Zac has with Soul Eater, that he discussed way back on ANN Cast; it's a shonen series. And while Key and Carl are my favorite critics on this site, I still can't motivate myself to do it! 
I know I've said this before, but how come Shangri-La hasn't been reviewed yet??? It's on Crunchyroll, it's free, and it's Gonzo, and it's been months since it's ended, so... what's up with...? Good job, Key! |

I just watched this a week or two ago--loved it. But I am a sucker for shonen. Also agree about comparing it to Berserk--a show that might have risen to the top of my favorites if it wasn't for that unfortunate non-ending. Thankfully the Claymore ending was MUCH better (though still would benefit from a second season).

The ending of Claymore was satisfying enough that I could still live a relatively productive life if a second season never came out but MY GOD would I ever love to see a second season.

Jeez, I really wish people would stop making this comparison. It's so, so misleading. I don't want to bash Claymore because it's still a decent show and I'm actually enjoying it a fair bit. However, saying it's a dark and violent series similar to Berserk is...just silly to put it mildly. It's pretty dark and violent by the usual Shonen standards but that's all. It surprises me to hear this in the review as well because it otherwise seems to be spot on. Claymore is essentially your typical Shonen show but with a relatively violent and grim layer of paint on top. It's fairly atmospheric and the characters are developed well. It's underlying shonen nature ultimately takes a lot away from it though making it an overall passable but disappointing experience. |

I dunno...I'm about 12 eppies into Berserk and I don't find the Claymore comparison to be wildly out of whack so far. And at least Claymore didn't give its lead character a goofy name like "Guts."

The Berserk anime covers the only stretch of the manga where it's primarily human on human fighting. Before the Golden Age and after, it's pretty much Guts killing monsters with a big sword. So the Claymore comparison is pretty much intact.

Seriously, the most superficial of similarities really cut the short the appeal, tonality and intent of both series when people make unwarranted comparisons between the two. |
