So I suppose this Genshiken set is even more shelf worthy, since it actually contains the entire series? Even though it isn't part of Rightstuf's current sale, it's still cheaper than getting Genshiken DX and season 2 separately.
EDIT: It appears the set I linked is a stack pack... so looks like some of the money saved will have to go towards a decent replacement case. Ugh... Agreed, great shelves this week! I love the various games and series set behind the various collectibles from the series. You must have a lot of free space to be able to have things so spread out! |

I question the 'nerdiness' of your friends if they do not have (or cannot instantly get) the necessary codecs.
The Genshiken anime did well for the scenes that were adapted, but it left a great amount of hilarious content out. I could even go so far as to say some of the best scenes in the series were left out. For this reason, I do not recommend the anime to anyone who has the capacity (willingness is a given; this is a series about nerds) to read a manga. Travis of Neptune: Your taste in figures is excellent. |

Erin sure got a easy week this time around, Genshiken and Nausicaa at once? Thats such a no brainer I doubt anyone expected anything but Shelf Worthy for those two.
I adore the first half of Genshiken, and loved the first anime series. The second half was still great, but it lost that whole "glimpse of otaku life" thing I liked to go with a love story that kind of didn't have a satisfactory ending for me. I still need to watch the second series and the OVA episodes, its on my pile, I swear it will happen. Nausicaa was great until I read the manga. For someone who advocated peaceful coexistance with nature, what she did in Volume 7 just rubbed me the wrong way. Regios.....still need to see that. |

I applaud your Yoko/Senjougahara collection, Travis--although I think Alter Yoko would be a better fit for the Gunbuster shelf than Hitagi.

Considering I just watched the Nausicaa blu ray last night, that is some spooky timing for your review. And it was the first time I had ever seen the show as well.
Thinking back to all the scenes and backgrounds, it really is amazing what was drawn by hand in that show. The forests, the ships, all of it. It was a very enjoyable show though. Now I need to go back and check out the extras. |

Yeah, I got the Nausicaa BD/DVD combo back when it was released over here last month, and the blu-ray looks stunning. The DVD looks like some middle-end VHS in comparison.
And I actually just rewatched it just the other day. It's one of my favorite animated films, and it's what I see as Miyazaki's 2nd best movie(1st easily being Princess Mononoke, which is my favorite anime/film all-around). I scored a "Master" on that Ghibli quiz on the blu-ray, but I think the highest grade is "Forest God?" I musta missed one. 
But anyway, looking forward to the rest of the movies coming out on BD here. Haven't seen Castle in the Sky in years, so assuming that one's next, hope we can get it sometime this year. Last edited by Sanosuke_Inara on Mon Apr 04, 2011 7:52 am; edited 1 time in total |

I know how you feel. Since last night I've been trying to figure out exactly where Star Driver went from being one of the most fun series of the season to the most abysmally disappointing. I blame Too Many Characters Syndrome. This isn't when a work has a lot of characters, just more than it is able to do anything worthwhile with them. Nausicaa is actually my favorite Miyazaki film. Objectively I know that Princess Mononoke is more sophisticated in its morality and story structure, but the combination of visuals and music for Nausicaa is breathtaking, and if I want more moral complexity I'll read the manga that grew out of it. Genshiken... does the anime add anything that the manga experience did not give you? I loved the manga, but I'm not sure how much I feel the need to see the anime (this has increasingly become my feeling for a lot of adaptations). |

Yeah, same for me! I absolutely love Princess Mononoke, surprised it wasn't in Erin's top 5. Any particular reason why? I think for me, Nausicaa and Princess Mononoke are my favourites because they both have quite a bit in common. It seems like Genshiken is highly regarded by most but I've never felt any drive to watch it (or read it, which for me is more appealing). I DO like anime where there are otaku characters you can relate to though (for me Konata in Lucky Star, that bit where she buys an already purchased volume of manga.... >.<) . I guess it may be because I've never been part of an anime club or similar? (I visited my university's anime club room and it was an utter dump so I never went back. Is this common for a room where geeks gather or was my uni's anime club just a messy lot? It certainly put me off checking out any other similar clubs.) |

My neighbor Totoro would probably be my favorite Miyazaki as it was the first anime film I ever watched, and my favorite childhood film. Second would definitely be Laputa, LOVE that movie.
Honorable mention to Panda Go Panda! which was probably the funniest miyazaki film I've ever seen (The UK dub). Hmm, I think I'll send in my shelves for next week. Always meant to. |

Good ole' Nausicaa, the Miyazaki movie I consider to be the therapeutic antithesis to Princess Mononoke. Both movies have the same general story--a princess tries to save a natural world from plundering invaders, but both stories having completely different outcomes. As much of a "masterpiece" as people make out Mononoke to be, I'll always prefer the first original classic.
I like Genshiken, but mostly prefer the manga. The story covers a lot more ground, and Saki is a slightly less irritating b-otch. |

Thanks. Yeah, I like that cubicle. It really agitates me that I only have the red box greatest hits version of the first game though. I've been toying with the idea of getting the black box just so it matches the set.
Thanks! Actually, my space is pretty limited. I just keep adding bookshelves or find new ways to display things. I'm trying not to add anything else to the cabinet though since it's starting to look a little cluttered. I like the games thing to. It's not like a cabinet dedicated just to anime, its dedicated to all the things I love.
I agree haha. It's a space thing though. Yoko's gun was sitting like right on top of the gunbuster 2 case and it was annoying me. I'm glad my shelves got featured this week. I'll have to submit again in another year to show the new things I get and any new kind of furniture arrangement I've figured out. I just wish I had a better camera to take pictures with. Currently I'm stuck using an iPhone which isn't terrible but it could certainly be better. |
