I will throw down $100 towards the original Cutey Honey, should that show be chosen.

I'd settle for RE: Cutey Honey, though.

EDIT: Just heard the part where Sam said Go Nagai shows would be difficult, but I don't care. I want my Cutey Honey! Laughing

Definitely going to be listening to this one - I've been wanting to you to have Sam on an ANNCast since the one with Ken Hoinsky.
I used to listen to them all but I've fallen months behind.

Akagi, Higurashi Kai, Umineko, this could be fun...

Also Blu-Ray if you contribute enough.

I just wonder what Dr. Pinansky did to botch his career in string theory.

I decided String Theory wasn't going anywhere, mainly. (Or was my research)

Very cool.
Quote:
31:20 Sam lets us in on his new project: a Kickstarter-alike for classic anime!

- about this new LLP Sam mentioned being formed: is this a US company, with offices in the US?
- what qualifies as classic? Just curious about kinds of titles could we expect (and to opt to fund for dvds). Like simply old titles, say 10 yrs old, that no one expects to be licensed, or only truly classic anime?
EDIT: ok listened 10+ mins more, I guess you covered that Smile

EDIT:
WRT funding -- that patronage system is a great idea. Since you mentioned having larger plans including funding for new works, will this LLP essentially be like a kickstarter, but perhaps focused one, where indie creators can pitch their projects? Or will they have to go "through the back" first to get the LLP to pitch them?

Dr. Sam "Quarkboy" Pikachunansky... Nah, it doesn't quite work. Anyway, cool talk about what Sam does in general, and, boy does he really do a lot. Keep on going strong, Sam.

I love this idea of not only streaming classic anime, but also being able to support them and allow them to be given DVD releases. This is a site I can really get behind, since I really hope that this will involve a bunch of shows that I would full-heartedly support. And "shows that need love"? Man, I am loving this site more and more, Sam. I'm one step away (the announcing of the animes) from saying "Just take my money, already!" As for the companies that will be involved, I'm going to guess that Tezuka Pro, Toei, & maybe TMS are all for doing this right now, at the very least.

Two questions, though, Sam: Would the fans be able to suggest shows to make available on the site, or is that only going to be decided by the partnership? Also, would shows that have been licensed by companies before but have since become unlicensed (a.k.a. "license rescues") be eligible for this site? Because I could see those shows require less money to get put on DVD, since the subs are already there.

And, Justin, if Touch gets on this site, then you better push like hell for that show to be supported as much as possible. Because I'd easily be willing to support sports anime being releasedon DVD through this fashion.

And since people are listing off titles they would support, I'll say mine:
Ring ni Kakero 1 (Sam, if Toei is involved then please make this show available, as I would try my absolute hardest to get this show the love it deserves), Akagi, Kaiji, B't X, Fuuma no Kojirou, Saint Seiya, GaoGaiGar FINAL (don't underestimate mech fans, Sam, because they can be crazier than you think), Dororo (yes, the 1969 B&W TV series), Naikaku Kenryoku Hanzai Kyousei Torishimarikan Zaizen Jotaro

There are others, but I'll just stop at these.

Another thoughtful and intelligent show. I am very excited to see what this new website will look like. I would love to be able to consume some classic anime legally and show my support financially. It is a great idea. Count me in!

very, very informative podcast Zac, hell it helped answered quite a few questions. Also it was nice to here about Dennou Coil getting a heads up as well with hitting the five year mark and I didn't even know about the license holders were mainly book publishers.

Tl Note: Moo Means Moo.. "I had to do it"
Fansub group that pisses me off... well go watch /gg/

I would happily throw money at Space Battleship Yamato to see a proper DVD release. I would love to own all three seasons.

I would surely contribute to bringing Legend of the Galactic Heroes here.

Why do I feel like the only thing that's going to be funded is things like more Kodomo No Jikan.

Lord Geo: The only mecha fans would want to support is more UC Gundam (especially if it's Pro-Zeon). If people wanted to support mecha than they would buy mecha anime.

I support by importing the manga, the t.v. anime had it's run failed meh. There are also series that funi have dropped like higurashi/znt or won't touch like umineko or you could go for card captor sakura, unico, cha cha etc. I wouldn't count the chickens to soon.

I'd need more details, but this seems like a doomed endeavor. If people aren't putting up 40 bucks for a DVD boxset, they probably won't be putting up thousands of dollars for a stream. Especially with no guarantee anything will come out of it.

I can't be too surprised, though. I figured more and more people would try to jump on the Notch/Double Fine bandwagon and cling to kickstarter for these kinds of fan-funded projects. Just how long until the market gets so over-saturated with this stuff and everyone's money is spread so thin to do any good, I wonder?

Though I think the main fatal flaw here is: people need to pay Notch/Double Fine to play their game, since it doesn't exist until they do. People don't need to pay this to watch their anime, since fansubs exists. R1 releases would be the main drive behind this, and even then, it seems like it'd only benefit certain niche titles and groups of fans, like a show that happens to have a very dedicated fan who just so happens to have $10,000 burning a hole in his bank account waiting to be dropped on something. Not sure how this will turn out, I guess I'd need to see price figures before making any concrete judgement.
