The Star Chamber rises again.

We've got problems with this sort of security above freedom thinking here in the U.S. too.

If you don't pass the laws then they can't be abused, and they will be abused - you can count on that.

According to NHK, the Upper House panel has just passed the bill.

Just pointing out, that the Prime Minister's name should not be linking to the anime Shinzo.

Man, I wish I could find that available somewhere, though. Haven't seen it in years, and never saw the full series.

I would have thought they would already have some form of national secrets bill. Is this akin to Australia's secret blacklist of internet sites?

Legit protest (though didn't work), however they shouldn't be "appalled" by the fact Japanese people voted Abe. It's democracy, good or bad, and sometimes you don't get what you were expecting.

Takahata said, "We are appalled by the fact that we, the Japanese people, are the ones who created the Abe administration."

An interesting quote. In the USA people tend to place all the blame on one side or the other rather than looking at the politicians who were elected to office. The politicians are playing everybody.

It should be important to protect state secrets, but I don't see why freedom of the press has to be diminished because of that. First, the government should protect secrets at the government level, then it should worry about the press.

Anytime governments start writing laws to be less transparent I think that is a case for the people to worry.

Is this to head off a possible release of future material that Edward Snowden leaked to the Guardian? When the Guardian found material in the files relating the Australian government tapping the phones of the Indonesian president and several ministers, they partnered with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation to bring the story to light. If there is material relating in Snowden’s files showing the Japanese government did something similar, then the Guardian would probably want to break the story with local media. With this bill, I’m assuming such a story would never be published in Japan.

Did I not tell you yesterday that this is not a political forum and political rants and debates have no place here? Heck, this thread isn't even about US policy or Obama whatsoever.

Good for Miyazaki. Whenever the justification for any new law is "it is essential for securing the safety of...", you know the new law will be insidious. Just remember, ignorance is strength!

There seem to be infighting over the state secrets bill at the diet according to Japan Today.

This is a ballsy move for a man of such a high-profile stature.

Edit: (in japan) It's similar to Chinese artist ai wei wei protesting the chinese government after designing the stadiums for the chinese olympics . It's like a football team getting in a fight with the mascot on the field .

Japan is turning more conservative, particularly issues with China and South Korea, while Miyazaki has always been leftist.

Don't worry about it. Everybody wanting to boink the girl with teenager body but life experience of a 4-year-old. Laughing
