Judging from this review, looks like this film is worth viewing. But I don't know if this film will get a US release or if any distributor in the US can get home video right for this film.

That's the problem, I don't know if this film will get a US release (let alone Hulu or Dramafever picking up this film). The other bigger problem is a lot of recent Japanese films hasn't gotten international release outside of Japan/Asia. I believe Zac has said this on another thread:

Zac wrote:
There are a few trend stories out there right now about how Japanese films aren't marketable outside of Japan and how, aside from Ghibli output, they perform poorly in international film festivals. It's considered a handicap and something they need to fix if they want the kind of box office and prestige that comes from having internationally marketable product, but I'm not at all sure how the industry itself there is approaching that or if they even care.

I've mentioned on another thread that even Dramafever and Hulu aren't even picking up recent Japanese films:

I wrote:

Even on Dramafever, where they have catalog of films from South Korea and China/Hong Kong. There's no Japanese film (not counting J-dramas) on their catalog at all. Even on Hulu, the only Japanese films they have old classics one, they don't have a lot of recent Japanese films that came out between 2011-2013.

I remember a few years ago Funimation used to pick up a lot of Japanese films, but they stopped picking up. They may have picked up Space Battleship Yamato, but they haven't picked up other Japanese films that came out not long ago in Japan.

Who are "Righty" and "Hans Zimmerman"? Wink

I love the manga & anime but I'm not looking forward to watching these movies. Although I'm sure I will at some point.

This is one of the movies I want to see recently but at the same time, Gone Girl is out in Japan next week as well. Sad Would probably choose David Fincher over this though.

"Righty" is a viable translation of "migi," which literally means "right" (vs left, not "correct") in Japanese. As for adding -man to Hans Zimmer's name, well...nope, can't explain that. Wink

I'm interested in the increasing number of manga/anime adaptations coming out in Japan right now after seeing Thermae Romae and Rurouni Kenshin while I was living there, both of which are pretty good. But yeah, unfortunately nobody's releasing them, even digitally. Double-unfortunately, I don't know what fans can really do about that.

Saw the film last night with my boyfriend and I have to disagree. I felt the acting when talking to migi was fully believable. I think what you are noticing is simply the difference in the characters personalities. While Shinichi had more raw human emotion, migi tended to speak more cooly and quickly, usually observing the situations around him. I felt the film was beautifully done, with a few less qualms than this reviewer. An anime adaption done right.

Thermae Romae (movie) is available if you look in the right places.

I don't want to see this movie until the anime is completed to avoid spoilage. However the review suggests the film ends at about the same place as the most recent episode ten of the anime. Is that correct?

I am intrigued to see how they manage the special effects. Madhouse has done a remarkably good job with animating Migi; many of the scenes are quite fluid. I've wondered if a live-action movie could be as effective.

A little off topic but "right places" is limited and not widespread. Also I can't find any US companies that has home video right to Thermae Romae, it's not on Hulu or Dramafever (if it was on there, I could watch it easily).

This is correct. Although the way they handled the most recent scene in the school was pretty different than the anime.

It's a shame that Hollywood wasn't able to make it's own version of "Parasyte." Still,I hope they do. It would be interesting to see how it would be handled.

Probably not, but you can guarantee we'll get fansubs for it eventually. Obviously an official release would be better though.

Yeah, but don't expect fansubs on Youtube to be there for long, I've seen fansubs of recent dramas or films from Japan get taken off after a week. The same for Japanese music video.
