I've been to Comiket multiple times, but can't remember ever going to Tokyo Big Site outside of Comiket, so it was really interesting to see the train station and Lawsons there so EMPTY. Also amusing to see that Lawsons outside of Comiket is still full of Otaku goods, it does make you wonder.

Great stuff from Nakano too, honestly, I'm impressed you have all the photos you do. I know we have ALWAYS got Japanese store clerks running at us waving our hands when we try to take pictures. I've got a cute pic of a Japanese bakery display case that made the clerks go nuts.

It isn't too surprising that Bamboo was nerding out a bit over a building. As soon as I saw the convention center, images from Genshiken popped into my head.

From what I can tell, Nakano seems more my speed compared to Harajuku. I'm not sure which approach to the maid cafe I would like better, the high energy style from the one on day 2 or the more low-key style mentioned here. If I was on a trip, I'd try both, but if I actually lived in the area, I would probably pick the latter since I could see myself growing weary of the sheer energy of the former.

Nakano is one of my more favorite districts to visit. It doesn't feel as touristy as Harajuku or Akiba. I like that it focuses more on anime production artwork than Akiba, which, for me, is a big draw. It always bummed me out to go to a Gamers store, see some really nice sketch and find that it's not for sale. At least, when I hit Mandarake and some of the other stores run by various Yahoo Japan sellers, I know I can buy whatever they have showing, even if that means getting up early in the morning to win the item at auction.

(I also like the store called "Junk World" in Nakano Broadway that sells used computer stuff. I think that's an awesome name for a store.)

One of the more enjoyable things is going a couple blocks away from a train station, wandering around and seeing what you can find. That pretty much goes for wherever you area in the world.

Nice pictures again and thanks for taking a pic of the animation studio.

I am pretty sure I spent more at Commit in Nakano than I did for my airfare and food...and I think it will happen on my next trip too, haha.

Thanks for the pictures, Bamboo! I missed out on Harajuku and Nakano during my limited stay in Tokyo but I'll definitely have to hit them on my next trip to Japan!

Bamboo, speaking of Comiket - I don't know if you get to stay in Japan that long, but Comiket is actually NEXT weekend. Every so many years they have a 3rd Comiket in a year, Comiket Special, and next weekend is one of those weekends. It's not a Big Sight though, it's over at Makuhari Messe.

Thanks for sharing the pictures of around Nakano ) I didn't have much of a chance to explore around town. My friend and I spent too much time inside the mall there Smile

Some of the really fun places are on Odaiba like the malls, the giant Gundam and the One Piece restaurant Smile I had a really fun time walking all over Odaiba it's such a nice slow pace from the crowds of Tokyo.

Big Sight hosts lots of anime events throughout the year too. I think Bamboo is there for the Tokyo International Anime Fair or AnimeJapan what it's called now, so they have been stocking up.

This was quite informative. I have not been to Nakano and did not realize all the different types of places you can go through there, especially anime related. Hopefully I can fit Nakano into my schedule the next time I get to go to Japan.

I was dumbfounded when I first saw a Lawsons in an anime, and learned how big the franchise is there. I grew up in Ohio with Lawsons stores where they started out, and wondered how in the world they got a foothold in Japan of all places. Then came to find out that's pretty much the only place it's survived. So whenever I see a Lawsons in anime or pictures like this, it brings on a wave of old home town nostalgia. Very Happy

Where is Nakano located in Tokyo? From the photos it kind of reminds me of the residential parts of Asakusa but with some more traditional neighborhoods. Quite frankly I've never heard of this area before but from the photos if I'm ever back in Tokyo I'd probably love to go if it has more of the older anime/manga stuff instead of whatever flair hit of the month is hot like in Akiba. I have not yet visited Harajuku but would like to visit it someday is only for the Evangelion merchandise store.

Which part of Odaiba is that convention center building located in? Is it where the Gundam statue is? Or in that grassfield with the Telecomm building? Odaiba just has these insanely HUGE walking distances of like 5 km that I can't really figure where I remember seeing that building, I do remember seeing it when I was in Odaiba.

Surprised the article didn't give a mention to the infamous fake Statue of Liberty in Odaiba or the Oedo Onsen Monogatari. That place alone makes the annoyance of going to Odaiba worthwhile. I'd definitely go there again.

Big Sight was far far busier today... Feels weird seeing the pics of all those posters and recognising them.

Did you happen to catch the dates on those Kino posters? I completely didn't notice them until they were too far out view.

Really need to explore Nakano one day rather than just going to the card shop there.

Where are the gorillas in the Gorilla Bar? Why is the front sign decorated with an elk?
