Trivia:

Taeko Minazuki's personal name (Taeko) means "delicate child," reflecting her clumsy personality. Mayu Miyuki's personal name (Mayu) means "cocoon," a reference to her family owning a silk company. Cocoons from silkworms are used to make silk.

Based on a manga series first serialized in "Young Animal," a Japanese men's magazine. In one episode, an issue of the magazine makes a brief cameo appearance.

The title, Ai Yori Aoshi ("Bluer Than Indigo") is based on an old Chinese proverb: blue dye is made from indigo colored grass, yet the blue dye's color is much deeper than the color of its origin. In another words, the pupil has exceeded the master.

In one episode, Tina Foster practices the well known song "Happy Birthday to You" while walking with her groceries. Later at Aoi's birthday party, the participants sing "Happy Birthday to You" to Aoi. In the English dub the song "Happy Birthday to You" has been replaced with another tune with some other lyrics. The song was changed so Pioneer (now Geneon) did not need to pay royalities to the copyholder (as the popular song, copyrighted in 1935, will not enter the public domain until 2030 according to the 1998 U.S. copyright law) for the English dub.

Tina Foster was from Hakata city (Fukuoka pref.) and spoke dialectal Japanese. Yuka Inokuchi (Uzume) worked as "dialect teacher" for Satsuki Yukino(Tina Foster), because she was also from Fukuoka pref.

In ep. 18, as Tina and Kaoru are in the midst of karaoke, we get a glimpse of the karaoke box' menu, which includes both the OP and ED themes for the series.

After episode 15, the scene where Aoi an Kaoru are flying around each other and then try to grasp each other's hands in the opening sequence changes. Before episode 16, they reach out and miss each other, but during episode 16 and onwards they succeed in reaching one another. This reflects the fact that the ambiguity regarding their feelings for one another have been resolved during episode 15.
