Sailor Moon's Takeuchi Draws Messages for Quake Area

Naoko Takeuchi offers sympathy for friends, children, mothers affected by March 11 quake

Manga creator Naoko Takeuchi posted three messages on March 20 to express her feelings for friends, acquaintances, children, and mothers affected by the Great Eastern Japan Earthquake (Higashi Nihon Daishinsai) disaster.

Takeuchi, a mother of two herself, wrote that she sympathizes with babies, children, expecting mothers, and mothers raising babies in the affected areas and wishes that they receive enough support during the crisis. Takeuchi married Yu Yu Hakusho and Hunter X Hunter creator Yoshihiro Togashi in 1999; Togashi offered his own message of support on the Shonen Jump website.

Takeuchi's sketches appear in the revamp of Bandai's official Sailor Moon website, which is marking the 20th anniversary of the franchise this year. The magical girl manga's precursor, Codename: Sailor V, debuted in Kodansha's Run-Run magazine in 1991. Mixx Entertainment, the company that eventually became Tokyopop, licensed the 18-volume Sailor Moon manga for North America from 1997 to 2005. Afterward, the series remained out of print in the region until Kodansha USA's March 18 announcement of its North American relaunch of the manga this upcoming September.
