posted on by Jennifer Sherman
AKB48 idols star, perform ending theme for action hero franchise's 1st 3D film

The Japanese film news website Cinema Today began streaming the live-action Ultraman Saga film's 16-second "saga" television advertisement and 18-second "combined" television advertisement on Thursday. The videos focus on the new character Ultraman Saga and the returning heroes Ultraman Zero, Ultraman Dyna, and Ultraman Cosmos.

The ads also feature the ending theme song "Lost the way" performed by the DiVA sub-unit of the all-female idol group AKB48. The DiVA performers Ayaka Umeda (Misato), Sae Miyazawa (Sawa), and Yuka Masuda (Nonko) will also star as part of the film's seven-member "Team U" defense force, which is composed of seven members of the all-female idol group AKB48. Sayaka Akimoto plays Team U's leader Anna, and the other AKB48 members in the film are Kana Kobayashi (Maomi), Haruka Shimada (Hina), and Sumire Satō (Riisa).

Ultraman Saga's story begins when a mysterious alien invades the Earth. Ultraman Zero, Ultraman Dyna, and Ultraman Cosmos come from outer space and join forces with humankind to restore the peace.

Several other trailers and ads have been posted in previous months for the film, which feature AKB48 members as part of the Earth Defense Force and the three Ultraman heroes, including BREAKERZ musician DAIGO as Ultraman Zero/Nozomu Taiga. Taiyō Sugiura plays Ultraman Cosmos/Musashi Haruno, while Takeshi Tsuruno plays Ultraman Dyna/Shin Asuka.

Ultraman Saga will open in theaters across Japan on March 24 in 2D, and for the first time in the franchise, in stereoscopic 3D.
