Yotsuba&'s Danbō Model Kit Spawns Amazon Variant

Kotobukiya's weapon-toting replica of manga's cardboard robot suit

Kotobukiya's plastic model of the cardboard robot suit from Kiyohiko Azuma's Yotsuba&! manga is spawning an exclusive variant: the Yotsuba&! Danbō Amazon.co.jp Box Edition. The new version will be available from the online retailer in December for the same 2,940-yen (about US$37) price as the original.

Like the original version (image below), the Amazon.co.jp variant can hoist guns and other weapons from Kotobukiya's M.S.G. and Frame Arms accessory lines, thanks to 3-millimeter holes in its arms and back.

The "Danbō" name comes from "danbōru," the Japanese word for "cardboard." Another model kit and figure maker, Kaiyodo, popularized the Danbō/Amazon connection when it offered an exclusive Amazon variant of its Danbō Revoltech action figure.

Amazon staff members took it one step further by marching in Seattle's gay pride parade in life-size replicas of the Danbō last year.
