Osamu Tezuka Museum Displays Unico, Hello Kitty, More 'Girly' '80s Goods

posted on by Jennifer Sherman

The Osamu Tezuka Manga Museum in Hyōgo Prefecture will hold the "'80s Girly Collection ~'Kawaii' wa Jikan o Koeru~" ('80s Girly Collection: "Cute" Crosses Over Time) exhibit from October 27 to February 20. The exhibit will showcase "fancy goods" from the 1980s, including many items inspired by Tezuka's Unico manga.

Yuka Cinnamon, who writes the "Showa-teki Girly Bunka Kenkyūjo" (Showa Girly Culture Research Lab) blog is collaborating to offer a selection from her personal collection of 1,000 items. In addition to Unico, the exhibit will feature Hello Kitty, Tama and Friends, and Kintakun items such as toys and stationery. The exhibit will also screen related videos and display six of Tezuka's hand-drawn key frames.

The story of Unico centers on a unicorn who has a power to help those who love him. The titular character travels through time and to different countries to make new friends.

Tezuka's classic character inspired plushes earlier this year. Gallery Nucleus in Alhambra, California held an exhibition last October to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Tezuka's career debut and 40th anniversary of Unico.
