Splatoon 2 Game Collaborates With Sanrio for Character Contest
posted on by Jennifer Sherman
Nintendo announced a collaboration between its Splatoon 2 game and Sanrio characters on Thursday.
The game will run an in-game promotion alongside the 33rd Sanrio Character Ranking contest. Players will be able to participate in a "Which is cuter?" contest to determine the most popular character among Hello Kitty, Cinnamoroll, My Melody, and Pompompurin. A special Turf War Splatfest will determine which Sanrio character comes out on top. The first wave of the competition will involve Hello Kitty and Cinnamoroll and run from May 19-20. The second wave will involve My Melody and Pompompurin and run from May 26-27.
The in-game campaign outfits for Inklings will also be available in the real world. Four varieties of T-shirts with the collaboration's Sanrio character designs are available for pre-order through the My Nintendo Store online shop. Each shirt costs 4,536 yen (about US$41), and some physical Sanrio stores in Japan will also begin offering them in the middle of May.
In addition, fans can vote for the collaboration characters in the Collaboration division of this year's Sanrio Character Ranking. As with the main character popularity contest, people throughout the world can vote once per day until June 11.
Splatoon 2 shipped last July. The game has sold 2,016,182 copies in Japan as of February 11 to become the first Switch game to surpass 2 million copies sold in Japan. The game is also the best-selling Switch game in Japan so far. The game's paid "Octo Expansion" will launch this summer.
