Gantz Creator Hiroya Oku Sells 1988 Artwork As NFT

Redrawn frame from Hen manga has a minimum bid of one wrapped Ether token

Manga creator Hiroya Oku (Gantz, Inuyashiki) announced on his Twitter account on Wednesday that he is selling digital artwork as an NFT. His first submission for auction is a colored redrawing of a frame from his debut manga Hen from 1988. Oku cheekily describes it as "the world's first nipples blur frame."

The minimum bid is one wrapped Ether (WETH) token, priced at US$3,088.25. The sale will end on September 29, 2021 at 11:59pm JST.

Oku also elaborated on Twitter that he has previously sold his physical artwork through charity auctions on Yahoo! Auctions. On those occasions, he was asked by overseas fans if there was a way to buy his work from outside Japan. His solution was to put his work onto the NFT marketplace.

Oku's Gantz manga ran from 2000 to 2013. The manga inspired a television anime adaptation, a CG anime film, two live-action films, and two spinoff manga. He ended his Inuyashiki manga series in its 10th volume in September 2017. His GIGANT manga ended serialization on Friday. The manga's 10th and final compiled book volume will ship in December.

Edit: Headline corrected from "1998" to "1988."
