Mononoke makes ET Weekend, to be premiered Friday Night, Totoro Sequal planned

We apologize for the late addition of this information -- we just received it ourselves. -eds.

The Gaslamp Theater in San Diego at 7:30 pm tonight debut the English version of Princess Mononoke on a first come, first served basis for those attending the San Diego Comic Con. Comic artist and sci-fi writer Neil Gaiman, who wrote the English screenplay, was in appearance for a Q & A session afterwards. (Future pre-release showings for the film include the Toronto Film Festival on September 18 and the New York Film Festival on September 26, at which time Miyazaki himself may be in appearance.)

Meanwhile, last weekend, the release of Princess Mononoke made the popular nationally syndicated Entertainment Tonight television program. The hour-long weekend episode featured the film on its "ET First" segment. The highlight introduced the film as "the first to break the $150,000 mark in Japan," and showed clips from the trailer.

A short sequal to the 1988 film My Neighbor Totoro (Tonari no Totoro) is in the works. The current issue of Animage reports that one of the three short films being made for the new Studio Ghibli (to be opened in 2001) will be a follow-up tentatively entitled "Mei and the Kittenbus". The project will only be seen at the museum (not on video... at least, in Japan) and is slated to be only 10 minutes long, but other Miyazaki projects have started out like this and ended up feature length animations.
